Trumpers and Native American face off

Editor’s note related to Lincoln Memorial incident

A Washington Post article first posted online on Jan. 19 reported on a Jan. 18 incident at the Lincoln Memorial. Subsequent reporting, a student’s statement and additional video allow for a more complete assessment of what occurred, either contradicting or failing to confirm accounts provided in that story — including that Native American activist Nathan Phillips was prevented by one student from moving on, that his group had been taunted by the students in the lead-up to the encounter, and that the students were trying to instigate a conflict. The high school student facing Phillips issued a statement contradicting his account; the bishop in Covington, Ky., apologized for the statement condemning the students; and an investigation conducted for the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School found the students’ accounts consistent with videos. Subsequent Post coverage, including video, reported these developments: Viral standoff between a tribal elder and a high schooler is more complicated than it first seemed”; “Kentucky bishop apologizes to Covington Catholic students, says he expects their exoneration”; “Investigation finds no evidence of ‘racist or offensive statements’ in Mall incident.

A Jan. 22 correction to the original story reads: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips said he served in the U.S. Marines but was never deployed to Vietnam.
Sounds like the Covington students are going to get paid due to fake news by liberals. Who knew that libtard MSM fake news could be so profitable? I hope they get paid a substantial amount that is financially painful for the Washington Post.

I hope the Post goes through the more expensive legal battle instead of settling just to teach the whiny kid a lesson on the 1st amendment.

The Covington kid actually has a very good case. The kid was not a public figure and was obviously defamed by the WP coverage according to most legal/media experts. It would be a very different situation if the kid was a public figure prior the event.

I don’t think the kid’s defamation is worth $250 million but they are like to settle for a 7 figure number IMO.

I don't see a case, they reported on what was put out and promptly corrected as the story developed. The PR of taking it to court and taking on the legal fees may not be worth the trouble.

This isn't some Avenatti/TMZ smear campaign.

I'm almost certain Trump's behind this lawsuit. More outlets than the Post reported on the story, and now the kid wants to sue for what Bezos paid to buy the paper? Not buying it.

Covington Catholic Student Nicholas Sandmann to Hit CNN With a Lawsuit for Over $250 Million

I hope that as a non-public person smeared by the media his legal team sues every one of these outlets that aggressively abused him. The intent should be to provide the outlets with a hardh lesson that their abuse to support their corporate narrative is unacceptable. While I do not believe Sandmann will get the headline amounts but the settlements are likely to be significant and an excellent step to stopping this news media corporate amount.

Being a professional victim sure pays now a days.

A non-public person smeared by the media has a justifiable claim to compensation from corporate media sources that smeared him as part of their agenda. These media sources ruined his future ability to get a job and college admission based on complete fabrications. There is a significant number of prior legal cases that established this principle — which is broader than the media as the culprit but also police/prosecutors who deliberately pursue & leak fabricated legal actions - take a look at the Duke settlements which included the media, DA, city, and university settling for staggering amounts to drive home the message that this type of conduct by officials and media is unacceptable- and must not be repeated.

Please be careful citing some significant number of prior legal cases establishing some principle....

Duke lacrosse players sued the Univeristy and various city officials, I don't see any lawsuits against the papers.

There actually is strong precedent that when the media reports based on the facts at hand which are incorrect and simply retracts or updates the reporting, they are not liable. You would have to cite these numerous prior legal cases because Duke si clearly not one of them.
