Donald Trump is 20 points behind Ron DeSantis among Republicans in polling for the party's 2024 Presidential candidate. Mr DeSantis has been portrayed as the New York born billionaire's main rival for the nomination as he shares many of Mr Trump's political positions but is seen as a more polished performer.

The Florida governor is polling at level pegging with Joe Biden in a hypothetical election amongst national voters.

In contrast, Mr Trump, who was defeated by Mr Biden in the 2020 US Presidential election, is projected to lose by ten points.

Mr DeSantis who was comfortably re-elected last month has yet to declare if he is running, however, his stature among Republicans is growing.

According to a poll by Marquette Law School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, among Republicans or independents who lean Republican, Mr DeSantis was backed by 60 percent for the nomination, compared to 40 percent for Mr Trump.

DeSantis led Trump by 53.2 percent to 46.5 percent, while his lead amongst those with a degree was 74.2 percent to 25.8 percent.

However, Mr Trump does still have high levels of favourability among Republicans on 67 percent down from 76 percent in July.

Mr DeSantis’ favourability was at 68 percent up from 65 percent in September and 62 percent in July.

Polling director Charles Franklin insisted that Mr DeSantis could potentially increase his support as 22 percent of respondents said they didn't know him well enough to make a judgement about him.
