If he used his private money why would it be a campaign finance issue?
I would like to see the counter argument made.

Did he write this off as a campaign contribution?
Did it come from campaign coffers?

Oh ... so they are going to get Trump on campaign finance violations.

Let's go over the rich history of campaign finance violations of Democratic office holders.

This type of thing only results in a fine from the election commission. Nothing more.
 
It’s not clear that the revelations will lead to an indictment of Trump for breaking election rules, even if SDNY prosecutors believe they are allowed to issue such an indictment. That’s because Trump can always try the same path of earlier politicians—he can claim he wasn’t trying to hide the payments from the FEC. He was trying to hide them from Melania.

We've known about some of this of course since the cohen indictment in which trump was an unnamed co-conspirator in campaign finance violation. The best that Trump could do is to just get impeached and convicted and then be allowed to go to Mar a Lago and play golf. He'll get no such luck. He's not going to be impeached. His worst nightmare is the thing most likely. Lots of indictments coming after he is out of office and there is a democrat in the Oval office. Then there is a high probability that he'll do time just like Jared's daddy, and like his own daddy, Fred, just barely escaped doing when he was caught with his hand in the federal cookie jar -- boy was Ike pissed! I imagine there are prosecutors mapping this out right now as I write this. The 4 years he spends in office won't help much with the limitations statutes. It will be tolled. When you're a criminal it is not a good idea to call attention to yourself. But you know he couldn't help it. Narcissism got in the way. To quote The Donald, "he's a terrible person, sad."

Neither you nor I have any idea if Trump is guilty of any crime. We will have to wait for some evidence to come out. So far you have no evidence so you certainly don't have a crime.

And if you had evidence... Kos just told you Trump may have a very strong defense to the campaign finance allegations....
It was his money and he was hiding the story from his wife. Its not like he could have legitimately written it off as a campaign expense.

Trump may be guilty of something... but so far we don't know.

In contrast though, Hillary declared her entire payment to GPS Fusion as a "legal expense" on campaign expense filing reports by passing it through her lawyer, which not only hid the expense but allegedly allowed her to hide behind attorney-client privilege to not respond to any questions about it.

In addition, after she bailed out the DNC, she extracted -in return for her bailout- an agreement that all contributions to the dnc would automatically pass-through to the clinton campaign, thus circumventing/laundering money that she would not otherwise be able to get directly due to campaign contribution limits. The recap I gave is actually the short version but I will leave it there. She got into some real heavy duty convoluted money laundering. She actually had donors contribute to the dnc's fund for state campaigns, and then moved the state set-aside money to her campaign because she controlled the dnc. Thus stiffing her own dems. WARNING TO VIEWERS: Do not try this trick at home. You will go to prison- unless your last name is Clinton.

I am pretty sure that the "federal prosecutors" are about to bring charges on those issues too. OR NOT.
