Trump: 'Take the guns first, go through due process second'

“The police saw that he was a problem, they didn’t take any guns away. Now, that could’ve been policing. They should’ve taken them away anyway, whether they had the right or not.”

He also said he does not believe mentally ill people should have guns.

At one point later, the President said, “I like taking the guns early.”

What would the response have been had President Obama said that the government should take away a citizen's guns, whether they had the right or not?

Trump may be exhibiting signs of a mental problem that go beyond his obvious narcissism. No astute U.S. politician, let alone a sane President, would say what Trump said, in the way he said it, without immediately qualifying or correcting the statement. Is this a clue to his mental state? Perhaps. It could be merely yet another indicator of ignorance. His ignorance of statutory law and the Constitution is appearing more and more as though it is encyclopedic in scope. As time goes on, however, I'm inclined to think his utterances may be a clue to his mental state rather than simple manifestations of ignorance.
