Trump ran for president on as aggressive a pro-Second Amendment platform as I can recall any candidate adopting. It was a natural fit with the nationalistic populism embodied in MAGA. Sadly, he appears to be selling out his gun rights base almost as quickly as he folded on amnesty and his promised wall.
To summarize, Trump is putting his weight behind a gun control package that the republicans voted down during Obama's presidency. The NRA has come out totally against it and Trump basically told them to fuck off. http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/02/28/president-trump-2/
I don't know if this is another example of Princess Ivanka's tears or if his increasingly democratic inner circle convinced him this is the way to go. As with his proposed amnesty, we now have to hope conservatives in the house and senate can block this betrayal as they did with Obama. It's orders of magnitude more difficult however when it's your own president you are opposing, even if he does seem determined to wreck his own reelection.
The math is clear. Trump is not picking up any votes for selling out his base, either on amnesty or gun control. He will lose votes however, just as he did for failing to keep his promises on obamacare. He won with a razor thin margin in key states. If a small fraction of those voters stay home however, he loses reelection. That is the stark reality he faces. It is also why the democrats and media have mounted a full court press on the issues most likely to alienate Trump's base. Can you say George H. W. Bush?
