Although I don't khow the actual trade numbers between Canada and the US, my sense from frequently crossing the border and talking to Canadians is trade with the US is very important to Canada's economy. In addition, per several conversations with Canadian Border agents, it seems Canadian policies are more protective of their labor markets than the US and more strictly enforce requirements to involve Canadian businesses in trade going through their country.
Trump still whines all the time about trade with Canada. US consumers may be "high spending" but other markets like the EU and China are quite large and meaningful as well. AAPL doesn't go from $95 to $190 a share without massive phone sales outside of the US. Boeing isn't going to sell many planes if you isolate yourself from world markets. Ford/GM/Chrysler will have to shrink tremendously if they are just servicing American car needs.
It is my understanding is the US consumer is quite the prize with their heavy spending and the US has advanced manufacturing expertise on some items, China is quite the prize for low cost manufacturing, Canada is quite the prize for location, abundant resources, and certain specialized manufacturing, Japan is quite the prize for specialized worker skills, and the European Union has some value add with their consumer base and manufacturing.
Your farmers and home builders already have issues.
Please be specific with our farmer issues. My concerns include under-regulated GMOs, overuse of hormones, antibiotics, and pesticides. Home builders I thought tended to be more locally oriented.
One can never get "used" to negotiating with a lunatic.
I am assuming you are referring to Trump as being a lunatic. I am surprised that a smart, knowlegeable, and thoughtful person like yourself would say this. There are many known problems in the US and Trump is systematically addressing them. From peace and trade treaties to dealing with entrenched political corruption, Trump is making progress.
The US has entrenched political corruption and they are trying to maintain the status quo through the media. You seem to have bought into their narrative that Trump is bad. Can Trump be an asshole? Obviously. Is Trump getting important things done? Yes.
One merely gets around him best you can and if need be bring on the trade war until enough Americans cry uncle.
The effects of a trade war works both ways. The US, with its massive potential manufacturing capacity, cheap land, increased access to energy through shale projects, and a skilled and productive workforce, and with a heavy spending consumer base would allow us to handle an extended trade war. There would inevitably be dislocations, inefficiencies, and increased chances of shooting wars making a trade war an undesirable outcome for all.
You guys seem to believe in the invisible hand of capitalism until it bites you directly in the butt.
In order for Capitailism to reach it's full potential, we need competent Government oversight. With Trump, we have that. It takes someone who understands business and human nature in order to keep or get things working smoothly. Obama era regulations disincentivized business investment in infrastructure and new jobs. True there was an economic recovery and ultimately net growth under Obama's Administration, but it lagged to what it could have been. We are seeing extended economic growth now due to increased business risk taking as a consequence of Trump policies. Is it exciting to consider we are only 1 1/2 years into Trump's first term.
Trump is laying the foundation for stable and sustained economic growth for not just the US, but also for it's trading partners.
