It seems McConnell may be Gingrich's equivalent in the Senate. I can't help thinking that the root of this unfortunate chapter in our American, democratic republic is to be found in the breakdown in the public education system, which I personally attribute largely to Lyndon Johnson. Though the harmful consequences of Johnson's Great Society initiative were unintended, they were damaging nonetheless. And now, though the mistakes are reversible, it is politically nearly impossible to reverse them.I truly believe the GOP went wrong in 1993 when Newt and co. decided they had been too long in the wilderness over the past 40 years and jumped the shark to winning by any means. Newt Gingrich is a psychopath and he lead the party astray. Their unified national platform of issues was totally wrong for America and a step into authoritarianism.
We are a nation of crises. We don't do anything truly difficult until we are left with no other choice. That requires a monumental crisis. Whether the crisis now in the process of being created by a thoroughly incompetent and corrupt federal administration can be averted without lasting and irreversible damage remains to be seen. The Trump administration, together with the Ryan House and the McConnell Senate, may result in an as yet unrecognized catastrophic storm that future historians may mark as the beginning of the end of the American Republic.
Any corrective action is most likely to start at the ballot box. The Administration has, with a few exceptions, purged the highest administrative offices of all but sycophants. They have also begun the process of replacing appeal courts judges with those likely to be subservient to Mr. Trump. In the meantime, the administration that previously benefited by Russian attacks on our 2016 election has done absolutely nothing to counter further attacks on our 2018 election. After this November's election, the Administration will replace the Attorney General, and attempt to bury Mr. Mueller's findings.* I doubt that without help from the Senate a House under Democrat control could do much to ameliorate the carnage already wrought, nor stop what will be wrought, by the Trump administration.** Help from the Senate, barring a miracle it would seem, is not forth coming.

*Robert Mueller may be the only real match for Mr. Trump's unbelievable temerity in defiance of the Constitution and our statutory laws. The future of the Republic may rest in Mueller's hands. He is competent, highly experienced, and has a layer, but thin, of protection. He has already turned over many of his investigation's findings not directly related to Russian interference to U.S. Attorneys and State Attorneys General. This will make it more difficult for Mr. Trump's forces to silence the truth. The crimes committed by Mr. Trump are numerous and of diverse nature. They may be prosecuted in district federal or state courts after he is out of office.
**The Constitution leaves the Congress fully in charge of nearly everything governmental save for a few matters such as embassies, treaties, court appointments and the military forces. It charges the Administrative branch with carrying out Congresses instructions. However The Constitution does not anticipate the extraordinary. Who in 1792 would have recognized the possibility of a criminal President and a rogue Congress serving simultaneously? Hence our current dilemma! (The founders obviously did not anticipate Gerrymandered House districts, nor did they anticipate the advent of internet social media and the "Tweet." And they certainly did not anticipate the impact, nor danger, of these advances in communication on the meagerly educated. Nor would they have anticipated that a Charismatic Con Artist with a severe mental disorder would someday lead the administrative branch of the government!!!)
