Here's an honest question.
Lets go back in time, say early February (the first U.S. case was Jan. 21).
What would have happened had Trump ordered masks, social distancing, restaurants/airplanes/gyms/etc at 50% capacity.... and because of his actions (with the luxury of hindsight)... no one died? Or very few did. We would have never known just how bad it could have become.
Had he taken those actions, what would the court of public opinion leveled on him? I mean Biden called him xenophobic because he banned China. Imagine what would have happened if he shut everything down from the start. He would have been seen as a nut. Right?...
The U.S. has a history with Pandemics just like other countries.
Health Officials could have just used a similar like response at prior Pandemics. Such as using contact tracing / tracking, quarantine the infected individuals and those they came in contact with and so on.
I know it sounds simple but many countries do such.
For example, in 2016 I became ill with a deadly infection that went sepsis while I was visiting my other home in France. They actually did contact tracing while I was in a coma via interviewing my friends and family in France and Québec, Canada.
My kids (last to see me) had already arrived back in Québec with their grandmother (from the U.S.).
All were quarantine too until health officials in France could identify the source that caused the type of pneumonia strain. It took them about 3 days to identify the source and another 2 or 3 days before other relatives were allowed to visit me while I was in the coma and on life support.
My point, you don't need to shut down everything, no lockdown of the economy. Instead, you isolate the infected individuals, do contact tracing and then determine what to do next.
In contrast, had you allowed thousands of individuals to enter the U.S. from other cities of China
except for Wuhan and then about
15 days later you then give China a full travel Ban along with the first hospitalized cased in Jan 21st without any contact tracing, no quarantine of the relatives of the patient that had contact with the patient...
That's like something out of a sci-fi movie in which a nursing home, another nursing home (same employee with a 2nd job), other elderly patients, then town, then state and then country...
Spreads very fast from a single person and now you're trying to deal with thousands of people that arrived into the U.S. from the same location...you're going to have a big problem and you need to get your resources together as quick as possible (not give away a lot of it to another country), use your Pandemic plan and anything else.
- February 7th he knows its airborne, more deadly than a strenuous Flu.
Now imagine if the hospital officials had a CEO that decided to
not warn other doctors / nurses / my family / my friend and so on that I was highly contagious. Worst, imagine that CEO not ensuring those saving my life had proper PPE, held a fundraiser at the hospital and invited my mom / children to attend and interact with other people without notifying them that my infection was airborne and they needed to be tested.
Worst, what if my mom, elders, military buddies became ill from not wearing PPE when they visited me in the hospital and a few of them had died ?
My point to your question...the President took an oath to protect the American people and his rhetoric that
attacked / laughed at face mask wearers, stating wearing a mask is not patriotic, calling Covid-19 a hoax by the Democrats and having rallies was the
real him while pretending his behaviour was to calm the American people.
He created a health crisis and the an economic crisis via his lockdown...he was always two steps behind the fight against Covid-19 and he now has to deal with it now that everything is out in the open.
- Trump created this mess...its on his watch. He made that bed and now must sleep in it in November.
Lets be more frank. The first responders were
not able to do their job and caught off guard by Trump. He's a President that's incapable of doing his job. In the military, we call that a
Dereliction of Duty (United States Code Title 10, Section 892, Article 92) that results in a court martial and if someone had died because of that dereliction...prison sentence although in other countries you would be executed
or poisoned.
Reality, he was more concerned about the stock market and his relationship with China's leader before the latter was eventually thrown underneath the bus by Trump. Now he refers to China as a threat to American politics (not Russia) when in reality...its Trump that's the threat.
I will give him one particular credit...he manage to get many research labs working on therapeutics and a possible vaccine in
record time. Hopefully they'll find a vaccine before spring of 2021 although we now have at least one FDA approved therapeutics....Remdesivir but Convalescent Plasma.
Yet, his attempt to bully / strong arm the FDA / CDC for political purposes has forced many drug companies / research lab to ban together to only release a vaccine that's safe and has gone through the proper safety measures. Unfortunately, that has created more distrust and now we have about
2/3 of the American people saying they will not be the Canaries in the Coal Mine via taking a vaccine.
That's a growing problem for Trump going into the November elections because a large % of the anti-vaccine folks are Republicans. Thus, its a contradiction for them because Trump made the health crisis of Covid-19 a political thing.

Hopefully all this craziness will be over in November regardless what government is in place.
