I've seen this is really creepy ways. When I was living in Africa I would have bottles of beer or preserves given to me... by men (usually dropped at the door) nearly every time it got around that I did something to make the local community feel safer. I learned then that a certain class of average guy lives in fear and is always looking for a hero to make him feel safer.
Obama being black rattled a lot of these guy's cages.
