Getting reelected is the only thing every politician thinks about. The election cycle is full time now. Incumbents use photo ops and federal money to 'buy' votes from gullible constituents. Many politicians actually represent the values of the people they represent. But many others will tell you one thing and do another, then make excuses for their behavior. In 2018 91% of the incumbents were reelected. So, thoughts of reelection are not limited to President Trump.
And the best example for your remarks would be Obama. He is the one that used Russia to investigate Trump prior to his election. He and Hillary combined their efforts to sabotage his election with assinine comments about him having perverted sex with a prostitute in Moscow which were proven false. Then, Obama helped Hillary destroy 30,000 ? emails. It was Bill Clinton that used his influence to halt his plane on the runway to have a private conversation (holding up traffic) with Valerie Jarrett. It was Obama that installed listening devices in the White House before he left. It was Obama that had 500k visitors to the WH, and only 1% registered as guests. It was Obama that entered the WH as a moderately successful middle class man and left with a net worth of 30MN, which has grown considerably since he left.
It was Obama that said he was so popular that if the law allowed it, he would have been elected a third time. Bush Jr and Clinton never said that.
