I might agree with you, but the evidence is that they did more than just give extra scrutiny to Tea Party groups. They actively impeded their ability to operate and raise funds prior to the election. In addition, the IRS applied illegal standards to block other groups, eg a Jewish 501(c)(3) applicant on the specious grounds that their goals were inconsistent with Obama foreign policy.
It's one thing to pat down a muslim male at the airport. This is more like they lied to him and told him his flight had been cancelled and he should go home and wait for word on when he could travel.
So, I disagree with all profiling and support these tea party groups even though many of them are in fact scam groups designed to pay off the board and engage in bare minimum activity. The old adage that it is better to let ten guilty go free than imprison one innocent still means something to me. However, I don’t agree the IRS engaged in illegal activity against them.
As to having different standards of when profiling is good and when it is bad is exactly the reason why the IRS is able to get away with this type of behavior. And, don’t think for one minute that settlement wasn’t politically motivated. The IRS would have won had this gone to court.
