It doesn't look good to me that North Korea is expected to have nuclear tipped missiles that can reach the USA, within months.
What can Trump do ? The Russians are publicly backing N. Korea and their lunatic leader Kim. The options are :-
1. Initiate a first strike and hope to hit the main targets first time. If this is the intention why has he made it so obvious by sending a task force that takes days to get there. The North has artillery en masse that can shell the South's capital Seoul and rockets that can reach Japan. These would have to be obliterated too. He is risking WW3 and a Russian/Chinese response. However he obviously can't wait until US cities start to disappear in nuclear explosions.
2. Put an ultimatum to the North Korean people that if they haven't deposed Kim and agreed to dismantle the nuclear/missile programs then they will be attacked and hope they will.

The Russians aren't publicly backing North Korea as far as I'm aware. What they did say is that they expected the US to coordinate any action with them, which is a reasonable request given the proximity to their borders.

Russia and China know NK can't continue down this road.
 
It seems to that becoming a nuke power is a bit like building an NFL team. It's better to build a good offensive line before investing in a franchise quarterback. Similarly, it's a better idea to develop delivery vehicles before you develop the actual bomb. Otherwise, you're not really in the position to intimidate people when you most need to.

Maybe the North Koreans don't watch a lot of NFL so they didn't appreciate this principle. Underestimating them has proven costly in the past, however. They may not be able to hit the US mainland with a nuke missile, but they have capable submarines. Subs can lay sleeping mines that react to acoustic signatures, say of a US aircraft carrier. They can also transport nukes for long distances undetected and release them in an enemy's harbors or perhaps well offshore on a naval drone.
 
If Trump attacks and NK retaliates with everything they have against SK and Japan hundreds of thousands,maybe more,of S Koreans and Japanese are going to die.The US will forever be blamed for that.

And if aliens come down because Trump attacks and use super ray guns on the US fleet, it'll be Trump's fault too.

The US should never have allowed other nations to get nuclear weapons after WW2. Now it's too late. WW3 is just around the next corner. The Russia/China block won't behave reasonably, so....................
