I think same for Bush Sr. and then the recession hit.. really took away his chances for reelection...sometimes the timing of something really hits your re election campaign.
If no COVID at all then we have a very different 2020 election for sure... guaranteed. But then you would not have the hypocrisy of the Dems exposed right after that in 2021 the GOP can use in 2022 mid terms so it is always a gift to someone.
That is why this Afghan fiasco will not be forgotten by the GOP but will the voters mostly care in 3 years....not that it is not important but they have short media cycles and we will see what happens in next 2 years before seeing 2024 picture clearer.
If economy hits a recession in 2023 into 2024.....Joe and Kamala are done without me even considering who is the GOP candidate.
I always said... if the GOP chops off the trump/mtg arm of its wing, then 2024 can be really easy. Dems did a good job of silencing the Bernie/AOC wing to an extent back then and they are far quieter now.
I like when parties change and move forward and 2024 is a chance for the GOP to get away from the trump/fox news extremes which will force the dems to get away from the Rachel Maddow/AOC/Bernie extremes.
Joe's problem- which is now everyone's problem- is that he has issues that are still in motion and the end is not clear. If they were one-time issues then, yes, short term memories and media cycles work in a president's favor. Example. Bay of Pigs Fiasco. Total fuck-up by Kennedy. But he very publicly took total responsibility to the point where his rating soared- causing his father to famously say: "I wish he/JFK would make more mistakes." Then JFK, less than 18 months later or something like that, created (through backroom deals with the Soviets) the supreme optics of backing the Soviets down in the Cuban Missile Crisis. So, yeh, full accountability for the fuck up and then doing something totally smart and successful can create a recovery for a president. So far, I am not sure that taking responsibility and doing things that are totally smart are Joe's strong points.

2022 will be the wake up call for Dems.. they cannot rely on Kamala so Joe needs to be surrounded by better staff like Reagan in his second term when he started losing it.
Dems will be arrogant in 2022 like they were in 2016 and I predict some upset victories. Only thing Joe can pray for is Covid disappearing so he can falsely take credit for it and the economy recovering with inflation pulling back after the logistics nightmare goes away and he can fabricate some other "victory"
Too many ifs.... too many chances for Bidens team to drop the ball on immigration, terrorism, China and the AOC wing further alienating bases.
The only reason I hokd off on any GOP major victory in 2022 because they are still swimming in the Cruz, MTG, trump pool...
