France is a US ally, not a colony. I don't think it is required to jump whenever the US says so. Even so, you may wish to keep up. Presently, France is the US military's key European ally:

this was the first one to drive sadam out of kuwait. What difference does it make if the war was good or bad, they still wouldn't permit us to fly over.
Same thing when we bombed Libya for blowing up a commercial airplane via terrorism... The French would not allow overflight.
The French are now merely reaping what they have sowed.
