If you look at some of the things kids need nowadays you'll find the gov't is the problem. Sucking money out of every nook and cranny of our lives via fees taxes, rules and regs (hidden costs).

Kids need a car & ins. Not only is the price range of repairs getting astronomical so is a frigging ticket. I don't need to tell anyone about the price of gas.

Then a kid needs a cell phone. more fees and taxes. Kids need internet very pricey for cell phone apps.

Any job pays shit for a kid in college and between a car/ins/gas and cell phone, half a dozen red bulls a week and paycheck is gone.

While we're in the business of exclaiming and hand wringing, I'll point out that the average loan balance for graduating students is around 25K. Less than the cost of an SUV. No problem, for most.

College tuition has gone up an average of around 5-6% per annum, right in line with real inflation (www.shadowstats.com), and their State allotments have been cut, causing a real squeeze. They are hurting.

I cost 7 million plus for each Iraqi we brought democracy to by killing them and it had to be paid for somehow. We chose inflation. It would have made more sense to bill Haliburton.

This might just take a couple of generations to change. I knew I didn't want to go to college yet my parents pretty much forced me to go; either go or get kick out and cut off. And it was pretty much a waste of time and money. But I will actually talk and listen to my kids to get a feel what direction might be best for them.

Now I know not all parents were as close minded as mine but I learned from their mistake.

I have never attempted to land a high skill level job but I'm curious for those of you that have actual skills, do you think you would be able to get a job just by demonstrating a mastery of those skills or is a degree actually a must have? Obviously this doesn't apply to medicine but for IT I could see more people being self taught.

then why as article(and examples from our real life ) are saying that there is a plenty of them at age of 40-49 STILL PAYING for their college?
keep in mind that price back then is WAY lower than it's now.
probably cause interest did pile up over the time plus they probably just paying minimum payments..

intentions maybe good,but i see TWO problems-#1-if you have no money or you aren't too bright-you shouldn't be in college. that's it(like with housing)-no 20% down payment + good income? NO HOUSE FOR YOU.

i saved all my life, every fucking penny so i can help my child the get a decent education.i'm not relying on ANYONE but myself.
our talk with my son was short,when he decided to be a doctor-it was simple. i said to him-do you have a slightest idea how much it would cost me? he said-yes. then i reply-you better fucking do it and go till the very end of it (10-14 years)and i will help you as much as i can,but you have to remember- if you screw this up-we all will be fucked. till rest of our lives. cause i have no f** pension plan or social security or pension or whatever. if you fail-we all fail. you are my back up,my pension and my retirement. i don't' need much. just give me some oatmeal and bagel -and i'm happy.that was it. go there and stay on top,cause you have no f** choice. :)
 
60K-70K for 1 year in private college in our area. show me one person,who seriously believe that this college is affordable for everyone. it's insane! and colleges are FULL!

I take either 2 or 3 night classes (depending on what is offered), and it costs anywhere from about $600-1000 a semester counting books. That is after the pell grants and everything though. So needless to say I don't touch the student loans.

I went to Miss. State Univ when I graduated HS in 2010 on a scholarship, I had to pay room, books and meal plan and it came out to like 4k/semester. Now I am back in TN married w/ son and my wife and I are both in college so the pell grant definitely helps!
