Trading while trying to lose weight on Atkins

Quote from TM_Direct:

you can cook them with a) a bottle o BBQ sauce ( awesome but lots of sugar and carbs b) throw in some butter, hot sauce and some broth and spices like garlic, onion, cumin ect....

If you like them Carolina style, or are interested in trying them that way, there's an easy low-carb, sugar-free mustard sauce you might like.

1/3 C tomato puree
2/3 C yellow mustard
1 C malt vinegar
1 t chile powder
1/2 t black pepper
Splenda to taste, or brown or white sugar

Incidentally, there is a way of keeping them on the grill for several hours at a low heat if you like the smoke flavor. Let me know if you're interested.

Venutos take on carb Vs Protein diets:

So what’s the deal? Is the low carb/high protein diet the best way for bodybuilders to get ripped or just another fad? From a bodybuilding standpoint, the answer is an unequivocal yes; reducing carbohydrates really works! Most bodybuilders can't get that "ripped" look without some degree of carb restriction. Almost every bodybuilder or fitness competitor I’ve ever met uses some version of the low carb diet when getting ready for competition. The problem is, most people fail to take into account their goals and their unique body type, so they follow the advice of the latest "low-carb guru" and take the carb restriction too far. Zero carb or close to zero carb diets are in my opinion, TOTAL INSANITY!

The other extreme; the high carb, very low fat diet, isn’t the best approach for bodybuilders either. These diets (60-70% carb, 20-30% protein and 10% or less fat) were trendy with bodybuilders for a while, especially back in the 80’s and early 90’s (Remember Nathan Pritkin, Dean Ornish and Robert Haas?), but their popularity quickly faded. Those who tried it discovered that it wasn’t nearly as effective as the low to moderate carb, high protein diet.

--------------------------------------

Looks like Dean Ornish's methods did not bode well
in the body building world.

Here is a very interesting quote:
"The only way to determine how many grams of carbs is right for YOU is to experiment until you find your "critical level." If you start dropping body fat rapidly at 200 grams a day, then why on earth would you subject yourself to the torture of going even lower and doing one of those 30-40 grams a day "ketogenic" diets? Why kill yourself?"

In other words.... similar to Atkins but starts from
the other end. Find out what YOUR bodies carb threshold is.

And....

"I also recommend getting off ALL processed carbs including bread, crackers, pretzels, pasta, bagels and switching only to natural, unprocessed carbs like vegetables, oatmeal, yams, rice, potatoes, etc. That single change will go a long way in helping you get leaner (and healthier too!)"

Bodybuilders are people too axe. They too are subject to same misconceptions and misguidance in the areas of nutrition just like normal people.

A wide variety of pre-contest nutrition is practiced by bodybuilders depending on what they THINK is right or believe gives them the best results. Doesn't mean their choices are always correct. Basically they do the low carb thing before competing becasue they BELIEVE the practice induces a mild state of dehydration reducing water content just beneath the skin making them look more defined. Get the facts straight for change, will you axe?

One practice that IS widespread among them is LOW FAT DIET all year round! Funny you never mentioned this. THIS they get right! If I didn't know better I'd say you were deliberately selective in your choice of info to post because you have an agenda of some sort :D

Nutritional status of nationally ranked elite bodybuilders.

Kleiner SM, Bazzarre TL, Ainsworth BE.

Friedman-Kester and Kleiner, Gates Mills, OH 44040-0367.

The nutritional status of 11 female and 13 male elite bodybuilders at the first drug-tested USA Championship was examined through food records kept by subjects. Diets were repetitive and monotonous, and average daily energy and protein contents were relatively similar for men and women. Percent calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrate were 39%, 12%, and 48% for females, and 40%, 11%, and 49% for males, respectively. Females consumed 0% vitamin D, 52% calcium, 76% zinc (as percents of RDA) and below the Estimated Safe and Adequate Dietary Allowance amounts for copper and chromium. Males consumed 46% of vitamin D RDA. Although dietary magnesium intakes were above the RDA, serum magnesium levels in females were below reference values, which should be investigated. Serum zinc levels were high in men and women. Eighty-one percent of females reported recurrent contest-related amenorrhea for 2 +/- 1 months precontest. Dietary intakes of men were adequate but the restrictive intakes of women may place them at risk for calcium, copper, and chromium deficiencies.

I used to play 2-3 hours an evening 4-5 times a week in Virginia humidity. Now? No way can my body take hoops more then 3 times a week, and no back to back days. I've lost some speed, but I still have a first step. I can always get a young fool to foul me. Plus, being a bit large, they assume I'm slow. Hah.

We ought to have an Elite Trader hoops tourny.

You want a peice of me??????

BTW , do yo have one of those huffy rims ar home? i have one and its great to work on form but little else...the whoel thing shakes with every shot....I can;t dunk on it either becuase it falls over, but to work on form and drives theyr are great

Fortunately, I never really got hit by a 30's fat attack.

I put on some body fat (for me) in the last 2 years due to
a diet super high in simple carbs and complete lack of exercise.
(Everyone would still say I was skinny though)
I'm lucky not to be carb sensitive. Most people would have
ballooned up to 600 lbs eating the shit carbs I was eating :D

But I cut out the simple carb crap, replaced it with protein,
and wham, melted all the fat off in a couple of months
with almost no exercise.

Now im at my college weight. WAY LOW.

So now im starting my body building from a good base.
Need about 15 lbs of lean tissue and I will feel and look awesome :D

As mentioned before, dodging BREAD is the hardest thing to do.

Also....I eat out for 95% of my meals.
It's very hard getting enough protein and dodging carbs
in a CARB CRAZY world.

Sometimes I have to order DOUBLE, ditch all the rice, and bread,
and eat the protein with the greens. Gets pricey.

That's what rolling over 35 is all about, but a lot of men don't understand that, which is why they usually don't do anything about the beer belly until it's obvious even to them, at which point it's even more difficult to get it off, much less keep it off.

Oh man... im only in my mid thirties, but this brings
back memories.

When I was 21-25 my weekly routine was:

Thursday night: Clubbing till 2am
Friday night: Clubbing until 2am
Saturday afternoon: 4 hours of full court B-ball in 100 degree NC sun
Saturday night: clubbing till 2am

Mon-Thurs: Recovery time.

And it was EASY - LOL :D

Clubbing?? You were a Club kid? LOL I can picture you in drag, spiked hair and platform high heels HAHA :p

I've never understood why steakhouses offer nothing but rice, potatoes, and bread. At least I can buy tenderloins in bulk through a commercial vendor and grill steaks myself (cut the way I like them and at a fraction of the restaurant price).

Run along now Long....you've had your fun but this is a cool thread and im trying that BBQ sauce this weekend...seriosly man, the arguing is out of hand

Body builders have tried everything via trial and error
and over the years have zoomed in on what actually WORKS.

The ZONE diet also calls for LOW fat, so what is your point?

I didn't want to pick on you TOO much, but Venuto
mentioned the Ornish diet in one of his article.
Body builders tried it year ago, and it FAILED.

HE also mentioned vegetarian diets. You wont find very
many championship vegy body builders.
The only vegetarian body builders, are not pure vegetarians
and consume TONS of dairy products to get their protein.

Now notice the ratios in the study you just posted:

Percent calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrate were 39%, 12%, and 48% for females, and 40%, 11%, and 49% for males, respectively

39-40% protein - VERY HIGH - Over DOUBLE the RDA amount
and definitely not what Ornish would recommend
11-12% fat - Half the RDA
48-49% carbs - low to moderate

Now according to Venuto, look at what happens to
the body builder diet near competition time, they
switch to:

50-55% protein
20-25% fat
25% carbs

Lets compare this to the zone:

40% protein
30% fat
30% carbs

Hmmmmmmmm........ Seems like the ZONE diet is the
closest to a MEGA FAT BURNING diet out there.

Now go away LongShot, before I have to slap down
your silly arguments some more.
