LOW FAT/ LOW PROTEIN/ HIGH CARBS>> thats the way to fly!
########################################

It is exactly this sort of thinking that has propelled the incidence of diabetes to epidemic levels in this country. A leading cause of cancer is NOT eating red meat or fat.

remember when Apples were bad for you? and eggs? If you actually (and carefully) read the medical journals regarding this subject you will see that the patients had high carb levels in their diets in addition to their FAT intake. It was this improperly drawn conclusion that has developed into the anti-fat campaign.

The American Diabetes Foundation recommends LOWERING carb intake well BELOW the FDA recommended levels.

IF you don't like eskimos then pick another low carb population - such as the Japanese. Both the Japanese and American Eskimo have, as a population, lower incidences of Diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (Angina, Elevated Blood Pressure, or myocardial infarction) as well as CANCER. These are entire populations who were either out of reach of the refined carbohydrates or culturally chose not to include these carbs in their diet. As a result, they are healthier, and often live longer than Americans in general.

Low carb diets are not dangerous unless one has impaired renal function and or low creatine clearance. One should always consult their physician (not WebMD) before beginning any diet regimen.

Franklin,

Thanks for the insight.

Quote from franklin:

One huge exception: Fructose (the simple sugar in fruit and soft drinks) has a very low glycemic index (is metabolized slowly). However, consuming lots of fructose will make you fat just like other carbs. Our chimp-like ancestors were apparently adapted to eating lots of fruit when it became available and storing it as fat. Also, the "fruit" they were eating was more like berries (more fiber, less fructose), not our "super-sized" man-made apples, oranges, etc. Eating an apple is actually metabolically very similar to drinking a coke (we've been "super-sizing" sugar-containing foods long before fast food became popular).

-------------------

Forget Atkins (his "induction" phase is nuts, and you don't need to be paying anyone to help you with this diet change). Just keep your carb/protein ratio less than 2:1 (based on the most recent scientific studies), but not lower than 1:1 (you can subtract fiber and sugar alcohols from the carb.s). There are about 7 distinct health benefits you get from doing this, with weight loss being just one.

BTW, it's also misleading (as some have done here) to argue that weight is just a matter of calories in vs. out, since that ignores the fact that it is much more difficult psychologically to do this when eating a high-carb diet.

IMO, the low-carb diet is so EASY to do (more meat, nuts, cheese, etc.), and its benefits are so immediate and obvious, that it will become the norm rather quickly w/o the need for "diet revolutionaries" like Atkins.

I agree 100%, but I hope for the right reason. However, I think you blow it when you make inflexible one fits all statements.

For example, for a long time there was the African American hypertension mystery:

Different climates and different cultures adapt differently and require vastly different diets.

STOP BABBLING ABOUT WHAT TO EAT WHILE COMPLETELY IGNORING THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT.........YOUR # OF FREAKING CALORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now, as for the RDA.....it is has been PROVEN that for some people, their protein recommendation is too low. so don't believe everything they say. their guidelines are for the average wuss doing nothing. if you lift weights/exercise a lot, it is SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN that you need more.

What is w3/w6 oil blend? I've heard of wd30 and 3-in-1 oil, but I wouldn't want to eat them.

The spinach & cheese omlet sounds good!

Foz,

w3 comes from flax seed (sometimes fish) and w6 from sunflower/sesame seeds (among other things). You can get these blends from the Nutrition Dept. of the grocery stores. I prefer mixing equal weights of all three seed and grind them in a coffee grinder. Tastes kind of neutral and I add it to my omlet after I cook it.

True, anytime you consume more calories than you expend you generally gain. However, on Atkins you're cutting out tremendous amounts calories, no sugar/low carbs. This keeps the insulin swings in check, the precipitant of low blood sugar which causes you to feel hunger.

Quote from max401:

Wrong, carbo breath! As mentioned, the sugars are what make the difference. The "typical american diet" is simply Atkins plus all the starches, breads, sugars and other insulin producing precipitants. On Atkins, they don't even want you to have Aspartame because it brings up the insulin levels. Atkins is in no way the "typical american diet."

"sugar make the difference",, bwahaha what the fuck does that mean you retard! go see the wizard..get abrain thern come back and debate me you jerk.great max.. keep eating your high fat diet max. you are about to become a statistik you freaking idiot! Simply that taking a high fat diet and eating sugar equals the poisonous "typical American diet." The fat is only dangerous when combined with the sugar/insulin which then causes the clogged arteries.
