Yeah, during my more active periods I'll have huge swings. Heavy into ETF's, but individual stocks too.

Academia: Just not my thing.

Private equity deals: I've dabbled in this lightly in the past, and have a couple things going now as well. Not really a full-time affair, and I don't see it becoming one. My main advice for anyone considering this is that you have to refuse 98%+ of all the proposals you come across. Only dive in with people you know and trust VERY well.

sponsor a young fashion designer.
give financial advice

Artists? Fashion designers? Why, to get into the local society pages?

As I recall, RM was once down on his luck before he made his mark in trading, and that he has lingering issues with depression and/or some such. I would think it would be far more gratifying for a guy like him who made it to help the homeless or poor in some way and/or get involved in mental health associations and their initiatives.

artists and fashion designers who just graduated don't appear in society papers and most have it rough, i think it's very rewarding to help someone (who deserves it) to help them with their dream and at the same time make the world a prettier place.

not to deny that a lot of charities are worthwhile causes.

Okay, but I would think that recent such graduates, however talented they may be, should probably take a few lumps in the beginning like everyone else, to build some character and humility. The reason I mentioned the causes that I did is because I think they might be more meaningful to a guy with RM's background. Of course, I could be way off.
 
Sports betting isn't much fun though unless you love sports.
Besides that though, the VIX is at 30 as a write this...we are along ways from a volatility draught..
Poker is more challenging than it ever has been. Taking money from clueless people is not challenging.
Develope a new trading system or learn to play brick and mortar poker.
I'm ammusing you haven't made a few hundred million from trading or have WSOP bracelets.

You seem to be saying on the one hand you don't care about the money, but on the other hand you are judging the worth of activities precisely on that same standard. You say poker isn't worth it because it's not easy money anymore. But what is the satisfaction, other than the money involved, in milking clueless poker players? From a pure satisfaction perspective, surely it's much better to play against superior players and try to best them.

If you don't need the money, then pursue things for their own sake, and stop judging them purely on how profitable they are for your bottom line.
