trading indexes

Hey guys is it possible to trade the indexes
I tried to trade spx with ib but a window pops up saying you can't trade indexes?

Trade ES U8 or SPY

An index is just that. You need to trade an index derivative: futures, ETFs, options or futures options.

It is frightening to think that you have a live account and are asking this question.

i am a newbie (who males lotes of mistakes)
Should have shorted rimm in the morning for a few minute I new it was going to go down (wasn't sure if it was going to pop back up, but i would have made a few bucks).
I was watching visa and knew to go long in the morning, fridays volume at the end of the day gave it away, but guess what i didn't.
what did I do?
I went long on ipi because I thought 44 was pretty low for the stock and I am down 500 bucks already
I don't know why I always end up doing the wrong move
