Trading in Thailand

I have lived in and traded Rawai for two months and now Patong for two months. I trade 1 - 3 min timeframes as well as EOD.

Rawai is in the middle of nowhere and you need a motorbike to get anywhere (about $3 a day). The adsl internet I used there was awfull - droped out all the time. You have to use a GPRS mobile phone to exit trades when it dies - admittedly it does make you a better trader.

Now in Patong I use a different adsl company - not quite as bad but still slow (less than diallup some days). Quite OK for the US session. Have not had to use the gprs to exit trades.

Would I recommend trading here?
EOD - hell yes.
Above 5 min time frame - OK.
Under 3 min - nope

what is this all about?

The entire Rawai/Chalong area is getting increasingly expensive though, plus if you live there you will have to deal with the dreaded Chalong police - crooks in uniform - trying to hit you up for "tea money" on a regular basis.

Living in Thailand sure is appealing, but you'd better know what the cons are, here a little example from a weblog of an expat who 's been living in Thailand for 5 years

basically, forget about residence permit, owning a business, even if you marry a local and have children, the gov. can always refuse to give you a new visa, well maybe it's a place to spend 6 months or a year . Not my type of "sleep well at night" place to live .
As always you get what you pay for....... just my opinion.

A good friend of mine who had been to Thailand a few times decided to come to Bangkok for a period of time in an effort to help him decide whether he wanted to stay here semi permanently or not. In the end he decided against it and these words of his describe how he reached that decision:

One of the most important factors was that I felt like a second class citizen in Thailand. I would never be able to own my own land, never have the right to vote and maybe even never be able to become a Thai citizen. This was not important at first, but it started to bog me later. I found it way too risky to build my future in a country where I am basically at the mercy of the Thai Government, and with the change in power, I was not so sure things would go my way. People with no tangible prospects should really consider if they want to have their possessions, a wife and a family in a land where they have a very uncertain future. I mean, what would you do if you own a condo, have a wife and kids and you go to the immigration office and you get told to leave the country within 10 days, that your visa will not be extended? People should consider if they want to (and can) put up with this. I heard stories about people who always got nervous when their visa was about to expire and had to do a visa run again. Work permits do not come with a guarantee, either.

exactly my experience and opinion! Lived also in the Phillipines (6 years) and a year in Bali. Even when you speak the local lingo in Bali you will still not be accepted, spoke to a number of expats married to local girls there.

Philippines is more forgiving, if you know where to go and how to keep costs down. Can be very expensive and the corruption in these countries is another issue.

I also lived 2 years in Hong Kong and know my way arround there. If done properly you do not spend much more than in the Philippines. But Singapore is my favourite. People are far nicer there than in HK. (generally speaking) And it is nicely in the centre - you can go in the weekends to all kind of interesting places.

Did love South Korea - was on an assignement there for 5 months. But like someone mentioned before: do not get involved with the local girls. Her own family will disown her if they know she sees a foreigner. But it was the safest country to be in, by a mile.

I've enjoyed your discussion a lot, guys.

It really gives a flavour for what it is like, living in Thailand. I've lived around the world and have been interested in staying in Southeast Asia someday, so I appreciate the comments.

The key is to have a strategy that you trust that will provide for you over time. Then you can live anywhere. All the Thai based traders posting here and the original poster - are you consistently pulling money out of the markets? (and how?:)) If so, then the rest is details.

can you post a pic of what the $115/month apartment and $200/month 2 bedroom house looks like?

Yes, you can find plenty of such apartments but:
-If you can make 4 month rent contract at least
-They aren't semi-furnished, you have to few household items yourself, but this is very easy, i have been doing it
-You need someone either thais or foreigner help first time doing it
-This will be studio size and won't be larger than 300 Sq feet, little bigger than a hotel room

7000 baht is less than US$200. that just seems too cheap to be true. how big is the house? is it vermon infested? is there hot water, electricity, phone line, and high speed internet that works all the time?

-For $200, it hard to get 2 bed-room especially in phuket, other cities are cheaper to live.
Yes, all this place have hot water and elec, but most no telephone
line and internet. Internet you have to apply and mobile phone and sim card is too easy and cheap to buy here

I believe this is true of the Philippines. You want western standards/quality you pay western prices and still a good chance it will be half assed and you will be screwed.

You have to live, eat, talk and do things thai style, If you want to fit well into society. same with any other asian country.
