Wow, thats really random. I just got back from Rio today and stayed at the Luxor. I consider Leme a much safer part of Copacabana and was never hassled once. The Luxor really is much cheaper and far nicer than the other hotels in the area. I never heard of it before I got down there though. Just walked into it and decided it was worth the move from the Copacabana Plaza Hotel.
However for the newbies, Ipanema and Leblon are safer and where the rich play. Copa is beautiful, but far too many prostitutes for my taste. If you want to see where all the sexy chicks hang out, you have to really venture into Ipanema. (Check out Posto Nove and you will never want to come back to the states!)

That's a trip dude, the pool on top is nice too.
All the hotties are at peir 9!!!!! They all hang there. Its a nice site.

I broke up the trip between Rio and Ipanema and made a few side trips.
I admit the beach in front of Meia Pataca is a bit Pro, but if you walk towards Leme, it is a nice mix of Garotas!
PS: I had high speed DSL in my Apartmento and paid for my trip while there.

I spent 4 months in Jericoacoara this past fall. It is a small resort town East of Fortaleza in N Brazil. I had a fantastic time, and was living like a king on $2k per month. I had a maid, ate out every day, drank lots of beers, and had a few very hot girlfriends.
There were a few problems though. Decent internet was hard to find, even if you pay a lot it would crash all the time. Almost no one spoke anything other than Portuguese which made communication tough (I speak English and Spanish). There was also a fair bit of crime, but it was petty, nothing major. I had a camera stolen and was drugged once. At least the drugging episode was non violent. They just took my money (about $100), my watch, belt, and flip flops (I always have top of the line flip flops as I wear little else on my feet unless its really cold).
Oh, and another good thing, it was acceptable to wear board shorts and almost nothing else almost everywhere. I loved that.

most inportant thing is I want a large viewable tv, no small thing up high on a wall far from the bed. And oh yes the bed, one single big bed, not two small separate ones. I don't intend to spend any one of my 5 nights there sleeping alone.

as far as the luxor goes, I have seen pictures, and its a little below my standards. Good for a budget traveler though.
