If I not mistaken Brazil, Rio specifically has one of the highest crime rates on the planet. Muggings are common. I would go to Argentina or Panama myself before Brazil, because I can speak some Spanish.

You are asking for trouble not being able to speak any Portuguese before you get there.

If you do go, I would carry a concealed money belt under your pants. That's how I traveled in Europe and guess what I have never been pickpocketed unlike others I have talked to.

Do some research on the web you can find demographics/statistics for anything these days. Go to the travel section of the bookstore and starting reading up/familiarizing yourself on the places you want to go.
 
Any third world Country can be dangerous. I would not be afraid of Rio, just use your head, and experience the best looking ladies in the world. I speak under 20 word's of Portuguese and am fairly fluent in Spanish and was well received.

(I visited some of the scariest Favelas in Rio and survived!)
 
Im going to Rio for the first time on April 1st for 1 week.

1)I found out I need a tourist VISA. What is the best way for me to get this?- I live in Atlanta.

2)If anyone else is going at that time, I would like to hook up. Im flying out of Atl 830 PM on sat april 1st.
