Trading Computer

Another consideration is available inputs for added versatility. [future proof]

HDMI will not support greater than 1920x1080p, for this you require dual link DVI [DL-DVI] or Display Port [DP]. There is a wide selection of Laptops with HDMI & DP, not as many have DL-DVI. It shouldn't be an issue for the desktops. Just an FYI

As I am sure you read from various sources that it is highly recommended to have a dedicated system for broker/order entry and a separate system for charting, research, surfing, email, MS Office, general purpose [GP] ...

Assuming a 4x27" monitor setup [nice choice], you could have one or more monitor utilizing dual inputs. Easily switched via Display/screen resolution/"extend-disconnect"
{{some monitors allow for split/screen as well}}

This gives you the option to utilize all 4 monitors during non critical hours for research/charting/GP etc...

Then during critical hours/active trading switch "research/charting/GP" to 3 ea. monitors and dedicate one to "order entry" be this either a 2nd desktop or dedicated Laptop.
{{or split screen if available feature}}

I personally use two dedicated desktops order entry/charting-GP, in addition I have one dedicated laptop with Broker/front end for backup/traveling.

Now to your question on Mfg.

I have had good experience with Dell Monitors. My 3008wfp's are long in tooth with zero problems, however, the monitor you referenced does not have DP. This limits you to one native high resolution input. [this may or may not be of import to you]

I wouldn't hesitate buying a Dell, Samsung or LG. I avoided Viewsonic over the years due to consistent poor reviews, perhaps that has changed.

As I mentioned earlier you need to determine your usage, requirements, desired features, then hit the review sites to confirm. TomsHardware, anandtech, CNET, PCmag, etc...

Is the viewing angle important? Low power consumption? Color?
Input? Split Screen? PIP?

Everyone has their preferences. Scat, ofthomas, Atticus, WinstonTJ, myself and others may all have different opinions. No one is really right or wrong. We all have different requirements, resources and we procure what best fits our individual needs/desires. It is all relative.

For viewing 2D charts any monitor will actually do. I spend a lot of time monitoring markets on the Samsung 46" HDTV's throughout the house when finished with my daily research. Quality doesn't compare to my 30" monitors, but the information is the same...

Good luck on your quest, happy shopping...

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention, When I stacked my 30" monitors, it gave me a stiff neck. Before you commit I suggest you measure the max height and width of any stacked configuration. Then place your current monitors at the upper and outer extremes. Spend a few days using your setup in this configuration, to make sure you don't have any ergonomic issues. Another reason I prefer the trip 30's... no neck or upper back strain...

Thanks for all of the advice. I want to use displayport connections. I believe both the dell and viewsonic have this. I'll look at samsung and LG also.

So let me get this straight. You have these huge 40 inch monitors throughout your house so you can monitor the markets. You use a computer designed for video editing or engineering to display your charts strung across 10+ monitors. I hate to break the news guys but I was displaying charts across monitors back in the 90s using retail computers I picked up from Best Buy over a dialup line. No idea what cpus they were, but they were anything but what you guys are running. Those guys on CNBC with all those monitors and big telephone exchange are doing slightly more than just daytrading AAPL and executing a few random options strategies.

As for monitors strung throughout the house...if you need multiple 40 inch monitors so you can monitor the market in real time I have some news for you. If thats what you need, then quit trading now. I can take one look at a chart on an iphone or not even an iphone...Ill grab a recent newspaper take one look and tell you which way its going. We are not on the Starship Enterprise where we need multiple monitors or a constant flow of information to determine which way things are going.

You guys are a bunch of clowns and can be outraded over an Iphone versus your Star Trek esque setups. Can I ask a question? Do you wear the Star Trek uniforms too?

Good for you dude. Care to post your returns from your stellar iPhone trading? Of course none of this is a necessity to trade, I just like using multiple monitors. I can spend my money however I see fit, however frivolous you think it is.

Al Brooks trades from a single 17 inch laptop and he is the best trader here.

LMAO.... without there being rules or even having a clue who is on this forum, kind of hard to make that statement... but I guess everyone has an "idol"...

His family is stupid wealthy. He shits doubloons. He doesn't care about the cost; so why not have the setup that makes him feel comfortable? Also, he trades some exotic vanilla stuff (dispersion) and is not a crackhead scalper in ES. Your argument is akin to a guy telling the Ferrari buyer that a Ford Fusion is a better commuter.

Put some cash on the table if you think you can out-trade him. Obviously it's not worth his time to do so. You really think trading from an iphone is best-practice? I guarantee that I can out-trade you from my work rig while you're trading from a smartphone.

And wtf are you taking this so personally? Is his hand in your pocket?

He's joking about Al Brooks, right? Sarcasm?

I think I have decided to go with six 24" IPS monitors at 1920x1200 (display port connections). I am leaning towards the Dell UltraSharp U2412m screens, however I would consider other brands. I would ideally like to mount all the screens on a single 3 over 3 desk stand, granted that it would be sufficiently stable. I have found a few stands that might work:

http://www.ergotechgroup.com/products/heavy-duty-17-24-36/hex-3-over-3-lcd-desk-stand-63/

http://www.aavara.com/en/products/product.php?id=72

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=soho&cs=ussoho1&sku=320-2676

I am aware that perhaps four 27" screens may be a more popular choice, especially due to the higher resolution. I personally would prefer to have more screens. And from an aesthetic standpoint I really like the look of six monitors.

I plan on ordering the equipment this week. Thanks for all of your help.

In case anyone is interested, here are some pics of the new computer. The build is completed, and it should ship tomorrow.
