I have a friend who after maligning pilots as ego maniacs for many years, finally became one himself. He loves it and the Glasair is the homebuilt he keeps saying we should build. I want to start simple and cheaper with a Sonex. Only a 2 seater, but that's fine and you can put one together for under $30,000, engine and all. Also for me the factory is only 1.5 hours away. They are actually working on a jet version currently. My buddy has it made for the time being. The place he rents from is charging $20/hour dry for a 172 or a cherokee. The airport 20 miles from the one he flies out of has fuel for around $3.5/gal. So depending how he flies he runs ~$50 an hour. Or a 152 for buring holes and practice for about $32 an hour. The 2 closest to me are currently renting 172's for $86 and $99 per hour wet. When I picked up my multiengine I paid $110 an hour wet for a Duchess. It was at $200 an hour a year or two ago, and then they sold because no one was renting it. Wish I had bought it.
