I just returned from a couple of weeks in St. Petersburg and Moscow. Having been born in Russia, I was very curious to return and see the country. It's a sad, pitiful existence that Russians live. They live in squalor, to put it nicely. The "average" apartment for a normal middle class Russian family would be what we in the US call a slum or ghetto, at best.

U dont understand - Russian population fall into 3 categories:
1) poor (what u described)
2) rich
3) very rich

there is no 'developed' middle class (yet)

the wealth distribution is more like in the market - rich minority germinates on poor majority.

however, "middle class" starts evolving. These are people with an annual income > $100K.

all of the above is my subjective view. I haven't done any statistical research on Russian demography and wealth distribution :) . it is just what I see living in Moscow.
