Trader commits suicide

Gotta agree with the health thing.

Better to be a bum lying in the gutter with his health, than a billionaire sickly bastard.

I'm very sorry to hear about this.

Not to digress too far, but I disagree that money is the barometer of happiness/social acceptance.

I have a lot of financial back up in my life, as my Dad has his own management consultancy, and I'm inheriting a bunch of money, AND I have a good education. So I don't have to worry as much as most people on earth, even 98% of folks in North America.

That said, I'm often suicidally depressed. Why? I'm short and very, very ugly. I'm 23, and never had a girlfriend, despite being socially normal. No amount of money can change what I look like, and no amount of money can buy me real love. The only way I can get sex is through prostitution.
Also, my physical appearance limits my job prospects to, well, trader (boutique hedge fund manager, soon to be).

I'm a living example to those who are currently preoccupied with money: love is all you need!

To add: I think that giving to others can really put your own problems in perspective, while being very rewarding. The marginal utility of money doesn't mean too much to me, so why not transfer some of that to the developing world through micro finance, NGOs, etc.

dude,

ugly?? unless you are physically deformed or something, ugly guys get hot chicks all the time. even ugly short fat guys-- so get real. think of carrot top or sam kinnison-- ugly mothers but always with HOT chicks. i can think of dozens of examples--- ugly and cant get chicks, me thinks there is more to it than you are saying....

There are many happy short people, despite Randy Newman's song. As for being "very, very ugly," I suspect that, like a lot of young people, you are possibly being overly critical of your physical appearance. Frankly, I think that there are relatively few "very, very ugly" people in this world. However, there are many who fail to do the best they can with what they have. You may want to look into that. If you are out of shape, consider getting into shape. Consider a guy "makeover." (Just don't ask your female friends if it makes your ass look big.)

Also, feeling "very, very ugly," I suspect that you do not exude much in the way of self-confidence with women. Not that I'm an expert on either self-confidence or women (unfortunately), but my understanding is that quiet self-confidence is like catnip for women.

And just for the sake of argument, money may not buy you true love, but it can change the way you look. Not that I would advocate unnecessary plastic surgery, but physical anomilies can be corrected for the most part where such need is genuinely indicated.

Buck up, boyo! :)

anyone in NY hear this? happened last night. an equities trader took a big hit or a few big hits and killed himself. i heard this from a few people. its very sad. anyone hear where he traded?

Biochemically, some of us are more prone to depression than others, and untreated depression is the most common cause of suicide. Losing large sums of money is not the only reason some turn to suicide.

A trader may be profitable and still be in a deep depression.

I hope everyone here learns about the symptoms of depression and gets immediate help if they think that they may be in a depression. Life is too short enough already as it is.

And I hope you are not ignorant enough to think people in poverty are happy or that it doesn't affect their quality of life

Ironically, those people are often happier than the super wealthy. They find joy in life.

Of course, when you are starving, it's another story.

I wondered what happened to Jimmy Cayne. thanks. I was worried.

Anyone who kills themself is a selfish ass punk that probably deserved it. They don't care what impact it will have on anyone else.

uh, not that brave. Getting through high school, that was brave.

But this should have nothing to do with me. I simply meant to put things in persective; some things in life are truly immutable...a trading loss is not one of them.

Haha...funny Wu..
I can't remember ever hearing someone say that they were 'really really ugly'...

Be sure of this though - you don't have to be good looking to get a woman...you just have to have self-confidence, humour, and intelligence..

Look at the kid from Road Trip - he banged big black Rhonda and she gave him her panties...

Also, Lyle Lovitt..banged Julia Roberts for a while....And he ain't pretty...

But success and cash NEVER hurt...

Meantime, sticks with the whores..they are cheaper in the long run..

This thread mixes up happiness and money. This is because so many dummies do not 'get it'. You choose to be happy (or not), yes, every day. Little money does not get in the way of this choice. In fact it makes having little money a very small burden, if any.

THIS IS THE ONE WAY YOU CAN MAKE YOUR LIFE. You choose to be happy. By this choice, to be happy, you reduce or kill altogether all anxieties or stress. You tap into the abundance of goodness in the world around you.

Can you choose to be miserable? Sure you can. You can see how addictive it is for many poor souls. Can you choose a bad mood anytime you like? Sure you can. It can become addictive as well. Can you choose to be a victim filled with plenty of resentfulness? Sure you can.

I choose to be happy.

Money: what does it do for anyone? Well, for sure it can give you a lot of satisfaction and pleasure. I choose success as my goal in life. This brings in money - a lot of money. And I like it.

But I have never confused money and happiness.

If you really think about it, for most of us, there are probably only a few, rare things, that we need, crave and are passionate about, and that actually make life worth living.

The rest is window dressing.

Keep life simple and focus on the core.

Quit buying the media-contrived bullshit backdrop, because if you're not a rockstar, billionaire, or worshiped by all whom you walk before, you aren't living the new American Dream.

Liberate yourself from the 90% of what you think you need, and set your mind and emotions free.

The most sadistic people ever known to man are advertisers. They are paid very well to convince us we need things that we really have ZERO need for, and convince us so persuasively, that we're willing to trade an extra ten, thirty, or hundred hours of doing something highly unpleasant or stressful to obtain that thing that we don't really need, when that time could be spent doing something we are passionate about and that enriches our lives.

We're all being 'astro-turfed' by Madison Avenue, which is the center of the new religion, and it's far more powerful than the old religion.

Fight back. Don't be a like a sheep as it goes quietly to slaughter.

We're only here a short time. Live more. Contrast less. Tell them to shove the latest 'gotta have it' thing up their ass.

There are few, if any things, that can bought, that won't lose the pretense of making you 'happier,' within two to three weeks of being bought off the shelf. You may enjoy the novelty, but it will soon wear off, no matter what the cost (unless it fits into the passion category, and if it does, you're golden; just be honest with yourself as to whether it's a true passion I have a true passion).

We're on the precis of history, men. We are the middle children of history, with no purpose or place. We have no great war, or great depression. The great war is a spiritual war. The great depression is our lives. We were raised by television to believe that we'd be billionaires and movie gods and rock stars -- but we won't. And we're learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed-off.
