As for these immigrants being the scum of the earth, keep in mind the wiki link I put up to the discrimination against Irish immigrants. (That includes Italians and Poles, at least.) They were all claimed to be scum of the earth at one time.

Back then it was sink or swim. Produce or die. Today, the paradigm is completely different. Produce...or collect benefits, indefinitely.

The problem us conservatives have with open door immigration is not that we see foreigners as sub-human scum. It's that many immigrants have no allegiance to America or its principles, bring almost nothing to the table in terms of skills, and really just aspire to parasitically feed off the taxpayer in the form of benefits and welfare. I think you'll find nearly all conservatives champion immigration if its done sensibly - recruiting only the best, brightest and richest. That enhances and betters the nation, abundantly.

I think the rift here is ideological. Liberals want the Government to act in a charitable role. And in the context of immigration, prefer the lowest rung on the ladder be given a chance to escape squalor/war/turmoil and create a better life in America. OTOH conservatives don't want the Government involved in charity, especially when it comes to unqualified immigrants. Yet, Americans are the most charitable in the world and American conservatives are typically far more charitable then American liberals. That's the difference. Conservatives believe charity should be practiced by the individual (and do practice it). Liberals believe charity should be practiced by Government via taxation.

This is why its very hard for people on the right to accept accusations of racism from those on the left who disagree with how they meter out charity. First, its libel. Second its politically disingenuous. No different then labeling moderate mulsims 'terrorists' to shut down discourse and discredit an ideological enemy. Third, its simply not true.

In fact, what will happen is the refugees kids will become more westernized, and we will just become a more diverse western culture with new minds and bright ideas. There are many people that have gone from an Islamic country to a western nation and what happened to their offsprings? They became much more westernized and love the freedom lifestyle way more.
