I don't entirely disagree with this guy with regard to the media's role, however the opinion expressed above is wrong. There are simple things to be done as any epidemiologist can explain. Washing your hands is one of those things. This guy is a pathologist ; not an epidemiologist.

The pathologist is definitely wrong about the efficacy of masks for protecting oneself and others when in public places. They are not totally ineffective, and they are something we can all do that is simple and cheap. The reason simple paper and fabric masks are effective is because expelled virus are not naked but are enclosed in aqueous droplets 1K-100K larger. These larger particles are intercepted and adsorbed by ordinary masks. There are studies that have demonstrated the effectiveness of masks compared with no protection at all. Some of these have been reference in posts on ET.

We also have medical studies showing masks are ineffective at preventing the spread of other viruses and that dirty masks are dangerous.
