Thank you so much.

I only want hold 3 for the long term. And I need one to put $1000 that is beat up badly.

BA is one of them.
CCL is one of them.
I need another, maybe XOM for the oil and gas boys.

Here4money,

Why not hold those investments long term?

I'd say arrogance/hubris. Regardless of what the majority of studies conclude, I'd say many of us here think we can eventually buck the trend, learn to anticipate the market better than others, & hopefully escape the grind if good enough at it. There's the learning/hobby aspect of it, it's not very exciting to pick winners and just see your nest egg grow, even if its ultimately the winning approach.

Dozu isn't particularly wrong if you're investing for the long haul, cost averaging into the market, fighting inflation & compounding gains isn't a losing strategy, but I think we find ourselves in a "trading" site for the reasons outlined above & why he's mocked relentlessly; because there are traders on here making a living from it. The lesson I'm too stubborn to learn is you can't be an investor and act like a trader, & there's a great deal of stress in playing part time trader.

Also, I want to believe I have some control over when I can fuck off and not need to rely on the timing of a recovery if the market tanks. Lastly, I've always been resistant to the idea of "the market will always beat entering/exiting because it always goes up". Might work for a stable country, but what happens when we go into so much debt that we end up bankrupting the economy & this ethos no longer holds? I think America's on a declining path and have been looking at Canada, Australia, & China's economies for long held investments.

FWIW, I did the math & ended up leaving this much on the table for not keeping those positions:
