great idea for a thread

http://www.infrant.com
Makes awesome 1TB to 1.6 TB network storage devices (that are also print servers)
cost about $1000
If you don't know why you need a NAS checkout their website and the tom's networking review...

http://www.foldershare.com
$99 / year
works well with the above for when i'm on the road and as loose offsite backup solution with friends i trust.

also great for sharing pictures, keeping a laptop in sync, zillions of things really

works through firewalls and unlike something like gotomypc one flat fee allows you to run on as many machines as you want.

http://www.gizmodo.com
great site for gadget reviews

http://www.lifehacker.com
a website in the spirit of this thread
"Computers make us more productive. Yeah, right. Lifehacker recommends the downloads, web sites and shortcuts that actually save time. Don't live to geek; geek to live."

Japanese capsule hotels instead of seats on long international flights.

No, they don't actually exist, but if I ran the world, this would be one of the first things to change. :D
hey, that's about the size of my apartment!

how much would you charge on a monthly basis??

I may be interested.

wait, do they come with Geisha girls? I'd be willing to pay a little more!

OK, I'll have to contribute Oanda.

Oanda is to forex trading what MS Windows is to the old DOS.

this broker literally changed the face and access of retail currency trading.

before Oanda you were forced to trade minimum 100,000-unit "lots."

with the advent of Oanda you can make any size trades all the way down to 1-unit.

In addition they are the pioneer and leader in narrowing the spread of pairs.

forex trading would never be the same after Oanda hit the market.

also, they are fully automated. no human intervention. this is in contrast to the old "dealing desks" where they could take your order or refuse it, they could change the spread and price any time they wanted to. and distinguish between different clients.

Oanda doesn't do that - it's all computerized. the most advanced currency trading system in the world.

Quote from eastside:

Here's my problem: sometimes when I brew coffee I want iced coffee not hot coffee & I don't want to wait for it to get cold.

To solve this, I need an appliance like a microwave oven, except instead of heating things quickly, it cools things quickly & even to the point of freezing something, like instantly making ice cubes.

Seems like someone should be able to invent this.

Try DRY ICE sold at some grocery stores. Pretty cold stuff. wouldn't dilute or add funky flavor either. (Freezer) Shelf life is a challenge tho.

Or make your own?
(This is cool - no pun inteneded)

Okay my entry would be X10 remote controlled lighting and devices. Too cheap not to be using in your house. Turns lights and small appliances on / off from the kings couch, bed, garage or car even- with plug in modules.

The following will be surprising to Americans, and morbidly amusing to anyone living outside the 'land of the free'.

If you're American with little overseas travel, you've probably never heard of Dipyrone. Dipyrone is non-narcotic pain reliever available everywhere else in the world. It is similar to pain relievers like aspirin, acetaminophen* and ibuprofen, but with one major difference- It actually works.

Available everywhere else without prescription, it was completely banned by the FDA in 1977. Reason? If taken in ridiculously high doses every day, about one in thousand people develops leukemia like symptoms from this overuse.

Since it can't *gasp* produce a narcotic high, there is little risk of punishment beyond confiscation, if you attempt to bring a stash of dipyrone back with you when travelling abroad. Highly recommended.

*Before someone points out the obvious: Yes, of course I know that acetaminophen (tylenol) is far more dangerous than dipyrone, and can cause severe irreversible liver damage (possibly agonizing death) with just one instance of overuse.
I never said the laws were logical. In the case of the dipyrone ban, someone obviously neglected to pay off the right politicians.
