Not a good gamble as Mr. Cain and his family discover during the peak of the Pandemic.
He and others that are not vaccinated would have had a lot better odds if more people around them had been vaccinated and/or wearing face masks...helping to protect those that are not vaccinated. Similar odds when Covid hospitalization and deaths are low.
Simply, it's best to gamble when the odds are in your favor or in a transition process from a Pandemic to an Endemic.
Mr. Cain wasn't a good gambler.

How do you know it was sub-variant B.5 ?
I mean, the only way to know is if your Covid infection had been genomically sequenced and they (hospital or testing site) then contacted you to notify you about the results that identified the specific sub-variant of your Covid infection.
At the peak of the Pandemic, the United States was only going genomically sequence of about 10% of all Covid infections to determine the sub-variants and now with the Pandemic slowing down...I recently read its now less than 2% genomically sequenced of the United States Covid infections.
Less than 2% is very dangerous because it can prolong the Pandemic by many more months and give people a false sense of security that everything is getting better when in reality it could be getting bad again.
Simply, some vulnerable countries may soon revisit mask mandates and restrictions because the spread is too fast and people are getting back into bad (less hygenic) habits.
Genomic sequencing remains the foundational tool for understanding how the virus is evolving, and how our defenses against it need to adapt. In the hands of skilled researchers, genomic data can spell out the deepest secrets of the coronavirus, including epidemiological behaviors that patient data alone cannot capture.

I don't. Since I never caught it until this strain came out and since this strain gets pass previous infection immunity more than any other I am assuming.
I thought testing would tell me but it doesn't.
Yeah, very few places in the United States are set up to do genomic sequencing of the Covid infections since the Trump administration slashed the budget for such.
Just as bad, the Biden administration didn't do better by only increasing the budget for that by only a few percentage points.
In contrast, many countries are doing much better as in > 50% genomically sequencing their Covid infections such as Sweden. It's one of the reasons why Sweden was able to get control of Covid so fast after it realized it made too many mistakes with their elderly population...their genomic sequenced budget jumped from 10% at the beginning of the Pandemic to about 70% in about 5-6 months after the worst of the Pandemic.
- Anders Tegnell, chief epidemiologist for the Swedish public health authority, stated it's one of the primary reasons they were able to effectively use the appropriate restrictions when needed to kick Covid to the curb...avoiding a lockdown and avoiding a more restrictive lifestyle.
Last of all, hope you're feeling better now and be careful of online advice by those that's never experienced a Covid infection or never worked / educated as an immunologist or virologists.
