To Mahram: An Honest Discussion about America

Oh, the Book of Facts? That was obviously a joke, (Hello? No book would list such a thing, since there is no clear definition for most benevolent country. But we can assume a country almost eliminating humankind wouldn't make the top 10...)

But if you really care to google the expression "book of facts" you get these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0141018577/026-4409475-6374004

One of my fav writer, Asimov:

etc.etc.etc.

Any of these books and websites are a good starting point for ignorant people to get educated on history/science. Enjoy!!!!

Honestly, it would probably take too long with no guaranee of a positive result. If you are not educated by now (I assume you are out of highschool), chances are even with the internet at your hands, you are simply just not going to get it.

The fact remains however that America is the most benevolent country on earth.

I checked the Book of facts, but it doesn't list the USA as the most benevolent country. We are talking about the country that invented (with the huge help of immigrant scientists) and used the atomic bomb and almost brought the world to an end at least twice in history. (homework assignment: list those dates)

Also you are using a logical fallacy of false assumption when you believe that just because A invented X, without A X wouldn't have been invented.

For a refutal of that belief check out the invention of the radio. (although my bet, you won't get the analogy>>>not worthy of trying to educate you)

Why did those immigrants come to America?

It would not have anything to do with that life, liberty and pursuit thing would it??

50% of americans still belieave in the war. Whether there was a good reason or not. Whether or not there was wmd's.

My problem is that americans keep pushing the 911 crap. 3000 people died in 911. How many innocent people died during the invasion of iraq. Not including soldiers, thousands. Even the us military admits that. and that was just the beginning of the war. How many people died after? 50K-150K according to http://icasualties.org/oif/default.aspx . But bush saids around 40K. 8K during the bombing of iraq.

About 3 times as many people died during just the bombings, this is according to bush, then during 911.

And what for? Are americans going to cry over 8000 dead iraqis.

Thats my problem with the states. The hypocrisy. They keep saying 911 911, we suffered. How about the 10's of thousands who died because of the invasion.

and then you have the americans who refuse to pay up for the war. If america broke it. americans should give whatever is necessary to fix iraq. If it costs 1 trillion a year, so be it. If it causes hardship on the american economy so be it. If it takes a draft, so be it.

But dont do stuff half ass. Thats my problem with the us. So much hypocrisy, and the unwillingness to sacrifice to give to the iraqis.

Do you think americans are willing to start a draft and give trillions a year to iraq. And do it for decades. hell no.

Quote from oddiduro:

I am not an "America, love it or leave it" type of person.

Politically, I am probably a libertarian.

But, I see so many threads that bash America as a big evil monster.

I would submit that America has contributed more to the world than any other nation, yet she is the youngest of all nations.

Our problems are unique as far a problems go. We suffer from too MUCH choice, rather than not enough.

Who would step up if America failed? France? England?

Without America, we would not even have this thread. Most of you are using American built computers, on American made software, and American designed technology.

If I am being arrogant, or misinformed, educate me.

I am getting a little annoyed with all the America bashing that goes on.

Before anyone brings up the war, that was the result of a faulty administration, not of a faulty country.

We push George Bush back in office because John Kerry would have been worse. The lesser of two evils. The fact remains however that America is the most benevolent country on earth.

Period.

Pekelo, are you serious??

Get a map and compare longitude of European and American cities.

You can do better than that.

Indeed, money and benevolence go hand in hand, do they not?

No. One has to understand irony. I didn't give you a serious answer because you didn't have a serious argument. Those scientists came because they wanted to survive WW2 and the Holocaust. Sure America was a better place, but how many of them would have come without the war??

But let's go back to your most benevolent for immigrants argument:

If by immigrant you meant those few millions dark skinned "guestworkers" who came between 1600-1860, than yes, they probably came for finding a better life and for the pursuit of happiness, and they were probably right, because it was much better to pick cotton in 110 degrees than dying of malaria back in black Congo....

And yes, I am being sarcastic....

Of course the ultimate irony is that being a slave in the New World was better than staying in Africa......
