80-90% is paid for the brand, not the material, not the built quality. But for a name. It takes a long time and discerning to figure out the few items that are of absolutely top material and built quality and are priced accordingly with very conservative profit margins on top. Saying a Patek is worth 30k displays a lack of understanding that the Patek-built quality and material is not worth a whole lot more than a 3k or 4k handmade watch with an otherwise similar quality mainspring, barrel, and the like. Of course, if you add a few diamonds on top or if the outer material is of very different value then that can explain the price differential. The largest idiot in town is of course someone who claims to have paid 20k for a Seiko watch. I mean, for 20,000 years among all humans we prided ourselves in making good deals and getting quality at discounted prices. And here comes Mr. Lackey and proudly proclaims that he paid 20k for a watch worth at the absolute top 4k brand spanking new. Of course, nobody can prove whether it was quickly removed from daddy's collection, is a fake, was found for 200 bucks at the local pawn shop or stolen from some mate in the locker room.

Bottom line is that there are many luxury brands that are simply just priced to make rich people (or not-so-rich people who want to pretend to belong) feel they are special. The price is in no way a reflection of the craftsmanship nor material. Or are you saying a Birkin handbag cannot be made cheaper from even superior leather by a top handbag maker who uses stitching material and zippers and other accessory material of the top quality and according to your own customized choices that in the end exceeds the quality standard of the Hermes version? Then you may not know the right people who have such skills.

It took Seiko >20 years to develop the Spring Drive. As many years for Coudray to develop the gyrotourbillon and a similar dvelopment period for A. Strom's Resonance movement.

That's a hell of a missive there. I can kinda' agree with the philosophy.

But in the end, the top-end watch makers do in fact make sexy watches. It's a weird thing, and even though I cannot afford a fancy Patek or Breit, I can appreciate their workmanship, and why people pay good money for them. It's a piece of art.

Like a Van Gogh. Who the hell would pay tens of millions for a section of canvas with a woman on it, in acrylic or oil paint?

But some people do, because they find it "sexy".

It makes their bits "fizzy".
 
"sexy" or because they are bored as fuxx and the only way to satisfy their ego and quench for confirmation and affirmation by peers is to possess the next item in vogue. Each year you see bored, unemployed do-nothing wives of rich fuxxs in Hong Kong sell their used handbags from last year's season because they can't impress anyone with that "old" trash anymore. They must get the newest stuff so that they have something to talk about over afternoon tea. The life of newly rich or those to pretend to belong. In a way, it is poetic: From the ground they dug it up (oil, gold, ....), turned it to riches, and ultimately purchase stuff that goes straight back into the ground after a short while of admiration and enjoyment. Except they polluted the place a little more.
