Tired of unavailable shorts at IB

Quote from bebe:

Bob,

I'm going to a brokerage that clears through one of the big boys.
(I'll let you know.) IB self clears - that's why their short list sucks. IB is too small for this.
The number you mention is misleading - when AT LEAST 60% of the stocks I want to short is not available - well, that FACT leaves a lot to be desired.

Good luck!

from day to day number is changing significantly. i have their list saved for like 5 months from now(using it for backtesting purposes) and number of total stocks can be from 3K to 6K(for all US exchanges)
anyway-let us know, if you find something better than that. i'm really interested in such info.
Thank you!

IB's short list sucks.

If you are a "letsbuyandhopeitgoeshigher" type - you may be fine with them. But if you are a TRADER (wanting to go long AND short momentum stocks) - you are out of luck. IB-s short list is a SHAME!
Absolutely ridiculous. Stocks with multimillion shares in volume and $5-20 price range are not available for borrow! No matter how you say that - it is simply UNACCEPTABLE! Give me a break!!!

That's why I am leaving them.

IB has about 5500 stocks available to short; pretty good certainly not perfect. I normally have no trouble shorting with them. Tradestation otoh is not very good for shorting.

That list looks like a joke - it is simply not true.

Try these today:

- BOOM, 3.2mill volume, $17 stock
- PACT 7.2mill volume, $11 stock
- LMIA 1.4mill volume, $7.50 stock

They are not on the list - and they are not available for short. Trust me: there a lot more stocks that are not on the list and are not available for borrow either.

Best,

Best,

interesting, that those are not on 11830 list was mentioned above, but if you enter ticker here-
http://www.interactivebrokers.com/p...y=lmia&cntry=usa&tag=United+States&ib_entity=

it says -it is on 11830 list
looks like joke to me too :D :D :D

Best,

I doubt you will find a locate anywhere on these issues, the float on all 3 is under 4 million and 50% of that is held by insiders. If somebody is able to borrow them I'd love to hear where.

PACT was available yesterday at IB - but not today - all of a sudden it is no longer available for borrow.

Yeah, I've had that happen to me a lot on these low float momo stocks. I would still think the shares would be hard to borrow almost anywhere. Good luck if you find them.

Best,

Of the three, only PACT is available to short at MyTrack today. MyTrack clears through Penson and I rarely have trouble finding shortable stocks. When I do, I enter a short request and they contact Penson and find it probably 90% of the time.
