The tick data archive on the TS discussion groups has been discontinued. I may be willing to continue this service.

However, I do not have much experience with tick data. Can anyone tell me how much storage capacity would be required per typical year of tick data per typical symbol?

Also, I assume there are different forms of tick data. For instance, do some include bid and ask info?

Does anyone know if there are any copyright or similar concerns?

Anyway, if the response is good and the cost not too formidable, then I will give it some consideration.

The data is effectively owned by the exchanges who maintain proprietary rights on all the data they disseminate.
Hence, it is up to the exchanges whether you can provide this data. It would be a good idea to check or you may get an unwanted call from the exchange compliance department.
 
While I suspect that the the exchanges will indeed take the position that they own stock data, I am not at all certain that this is actually the case.

The only way that I am aware of for them making such a claim, at least after the data has been made public, is via copyright. But, I do not believe that the data is even copyrightable (admittedly, I could be wrong about this). I am not aware of any database protection (sweat of the brow - as it has been referred to) legislation actually being passed (some was pending a few years ago).

Anyway, if anyone actually understands this situation, their input would be appreciated. And, if there is sufficient interest, I may contact the exchanges and at least get their point of view.

However, other things that trouble me are the storage requirements (and their cost) and the likelihood of TradeStation beginning to offer more historic tick data.

I may be willing to purchase a few terabytes of storage capacity. But, if TS is going to increase their offering of historic data, then there really isn't much point in me doing any archiving.

If what you were saying is true then what would stop me from subscribing to a data provider and then offering the feed to everyone else at a tenth of the cost I pay?

No one is going to sell you data without a contract that prevents you from turning around and competing with them (unless they dont want to be in business for very long)
 
Much data is readily available on the Internet. When I get charts (a form of data) from Yahoo, I have not entered into a contract regarding use/protection/resell thereof. I do not know how much tick data is freely available without restriction.

More particularly, a tick data archive would likely comprise tick data supplied to me by individuals (I suppose I could purchase tick data from the exchanges - assuming they have historic tick - but then I would have to charge others for it and that defeats the purpose of a public archive). I would have no contract with these individuals and therefor no obligation not to further disseminate.

I would not need to know how they obtained the tick data. I believe that there are some free sources of time and sells info that could be used to compile tick data over time. There may be many ways for others to obtain the data. Again, how and where they get the data may not have to be my concern (or perhaps it may - I need to look into this).

Tick data is merely a compilation of historic facts. On this date, at this time, so many shares of this symbol were sold. I don't believe that the communication of such factual and historic information can be prohibited. But, again I could be wrong. I think that it is worth looking into, as long as the cost is not prohibitive and as long as someone else , like TS, is not going to provide such data soon.
