I've been short selling Ebay simply because it's run by a woman.
How many successful cut throat businesses outside of gaydom ( fashion, cosmetics and toys ) do you know that are run efficiently by a woman?
None
Ebay IS a monopoly and many monopolies can make big mistakes (like the Skype purchase !) and still survive and indeed thrive.Quote from ddunbar:
EBAY is thinking like a monopoly. All the while failing to notice that they are slowly becoming a niche player.

The fact that Goog has not created a real Google Auction site given the breadth of their technical ability, remains a mystery.

Uh.....Carly Fiorina. Good short selling of Ebay dumbo. That 30% pop must be doing wonders for you.
Quote from verbotenlaandia:
Fiorina is probably not the best example, since she was fired and was considered by Wall St. to be driving HPQ into the ground.
If women are considered to be worse at running companies than men, it's probably not due to a lack of brainpower. They just have to spend more of their energy trying to "prove" they belong.

The stock has been in a downtrend for 2 years, wtf are you talking about? All of these issues have been known for years, so it seems like those who "thought" of em, have been selling the stock and/or shorting it.
Stick to Cramer idolizing, this stuff is too complicated for you.

Quasi-monopoly or niche monopoly.
As other posters already stated, they can sell their wares on Amazon.com's marketplace. Ebay's a monopoly when it comes to selling used/collectible items. But I often find that when I'm selling other things like books, CD's, and electronic goods, I have a choice between Ebay and Amazon. I often choose Amazon. I get a better price than I would on Ebay and I can list longer and for free on Amazon.
Quote from ddunbar:
What's ridiculous is that EBAY owns PAYPAL... And when you transact on EBAY using paypal, EBAY charges Sellers a final value fee and a PAYPAL transaction fee.
Stupid. But Sellers put up with it because there's no competition.
