This war is illegal!

THE BUNNY AND THE SNAKE

Once upon a time (allegedly) in a nice little forest, there lived an

orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake. By a surprising coincidence,

both were blind from birth.

One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was

slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake

and fell down. This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit.

"Oh, my," said the bunny, "I'm terribly sorry. I didn't mean to hurt

you. I've been blind since birth, so, I can't see where I'm going. In

fact, since I'm also an orphan, I don't even know what I am."

"It's quite OK," replied the snake. "Actually, my story is much the

same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my

mother. Tell you what, maybe I could slither all over you, and work out
what

you are, so at least you'll have that going for you."

"Oh, that would be wonderful" replied the bunny. So the snake

slithered all over the bunny, and said, "Well, you're covered with soft fur;

you

have really long ears; your nose twitches; and you have a soft cottony

tail. I'd say that you must be a bunny rabbit."

"Oh, thank you! Thank you," cried the bunny, in obvious excitement.

The bunny suggested to the snake, "Maybe I could feel you all over with my

paw, and help you the same way that you've helped me."

So the bunny felt the snake all over, and remarked, "Well, you're

smooth and slippery, and you have a forked tongue, no backbone and no balls.

I'd say you must be French".

PROPAGANDA-FELDZUG

Empty, totally hypocritical article. Including numerous transparently ideological assertions paraded as facts, along with the usual distortions, exaggerations, and half-truths - apparently part 2 even repeats the definitively debunked claim that Iran, not Iraq, was responsible for gassing the Kurds. A similar article could easily be written, and some have been written, about the biases of the European media.

I'd go further, but why bother? You've never shown the ability to defend your cut-and-pastes and relentlessly impertinent comments in any meaningful, much less persuasive way.

New York City Council Expected To Pass Anti-War Resolution

MARCH 12TH, 2003
Following the lead of more than 100 other cities, the New York City Council on Wednesday is expected to approve a controversial resolution opposing a war on Iraq.

To get enough votes, sharp criticisms of the Bush administration and predictions of dire consequences for the United States were dropped from the proposed resolution. The toned-down resolution urges the White House to work through the United Nations Security Council, but it does not rule out war as a last resort.

this one is problematic - it's easy to revile the Germans, French, Turks, etc. - but how best to berate the 'unpatriotism' of New Yorkers?

They are above criticism because they happen to live in New York? We respect the courageous firemen and police officers, not a bunch of left wing pol's.

Anyway, no one is saying people are unpatriotic because they have different opinions on the wisdom of war. Many of us do have a big problem with overtly anti-american demonstrations at a time when we have troops poised to go into battle.

And here's one example of the approach adopted by "Europe's #1 weekly political magazine."

http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/inhalt/0,1518,grossbild-242831-,00.html

I'm not sure from where the editors derived the title phrase, which translates, or perhaps re-translates, approximately as "On a divine mission." The sub-head is "The Crusade of G.W. Bush." Certainly the Spiegel editors are fully aware of how problematic the term "crusade" is in the current political context - indeed, they clearly hope to exploit it in the interests of attracting, and further inflaming their readership. Ditto for the image of Bush speaking from beneath a severe-looking cross, as though preaching or testifying. What I find even more interesting though are the black-and-white photographs that frame the image: The combination of militarist images, along with the hand gesture Bush is making in the photo on the upper right, make it hard to overlook a flagrant attempt to evoke archival images of Hitler.

Though Der Spiegel certainly includes articles meant to offer "balance," it's well-known to embody a leftwing perspective, which, in the German Context, means democratic socialist.

The intro to the cover story runs as follows:

Mit dem Sturm auf Bagdad will US-Präsident George W. Bush einen göttlichen Auftrag erfüllen. Selten sind im tiefgläubigen Amerika nationale Machtinteressen und fundamentalistische Frömmelei eine so innige Verbindung eingegangen. Christliche Eiferer rufen zum Kreuzzug gegen den Islam.

"By storming Baghdad, US President George W. Bush seeks to fulfill a holy mission [mission from God]. Rarely in deeply religious America have fundamentalist bigotry [sanctimony] and national political forces been so intimately linked. Christian zealots call for a crusade against Islam."

When mainstream European magazines give US policy a treatment like this one, depicting Bush as a Christian-fascist storm trooper emerging from some repressed historical nightmare, is it any wonder that the European public thinks we've gone off the deep end?

:D - agree with you there, AAA

Anyway, no one is saying people are unpatriotic because they have different opinions on the wisdom of war. Many of us do have a big problem with overtly anti-american demonstrations at a time when we have troops poised to go into battle.
but not on this - that is exactly how they've tried to spin it, that someone disagreeing with the president is somehow disagreeing with 'America,' and that irrelevant old europe is not 'there for Americans when it is needed.'

anti-administration policy demonstrations don't equate to anti-military personnel demonstrations. hopefully no one's blaming the soldiers - but that doesn't mean their leaders are above criticism. jmho.

I almost hope you guys would get your wish.

And be doomed to trade this FLAT MARKET, from now to the end of 2025.

Yeah, let the UN manage the situation and contain IRAQ, I am sure that would increase confidence in burying money in jars in the back yard.

Saddam exposes his bomb program and starts giving out some anthrax for input into the NYC subway system.

Then you would see the money fly out of the market and go to REAL ESTATE and Gold Coins.

You would be doomed, to a slow FLAT DOWN WARD SPIRAL that only somebody with 10 million in buying power could trade to EEK out 30 dollars in profit.

Let us hope that if there is war, it will be swift and claim few lives. Removing Mr. Hussein is a good thing, yet the way Mr. Bush is going about it must be condemned. America must play a more constructive role if humanity is to make any progress.

IMHO:
It is not what you say, but how you say it, that is important. I think the Bush administration really blows it this time.

Every Tom Dick Harry (and now George) is on a Bush beating mission.

What conveniently is overlooked is that for years the U.N. were sitting on their hands (or more likely they were too busy playing pocket billiards).

Why wasn't some drastic posturing done several years ago ?
What excuse do they have for their display of inaction ?
