After Vietnam ended, 'murica needed another enemy so the Russian bear was created and the arms race ensued.
With the bear gone, what better enemy than govt sponsored terrorism, namely by the Saudi's, to help 'murica with another enemy. I am amazed that people were surprised that Saudi money found its way to ISIS.

How do you know those death chanters aren't govt paid actors? The Saudi's benefit by paying people to radicalize their people to prevent the masses from rising up and demanding some of that oil money going to the crown.
This terrorism era will continue until we can build robot armies that can pose as the new foe.

The Russian bear existed since the end of WW2. The West had a policy of Containment and other political/measures put into place since 1946. The Russian bear was not created after Vietnam ended.

Would you prefer Soviet Union dominated the earth and you would enjoy your life under communism.

See I put the real ramp of the Russian bear when Rumsfeld was called back to Washington under Ford, his Plan B was the real starting point to the arms race that took off under Reagan.
