I wonder if it was a take off of the real action or just coincidence.

I don't know what the inspiration of the movie was but it was quite similiar to my experience in Liberia. The movie you are talking about is Rules of Engagement and in my opinion it was absolute rubbish. Completely unrealistic and unbelievable.
