Profit and lost aside, I believe Ben just poured more fuel into the fire. An Asian idiom state that he's bringing wood back into the forest. The current administration is spending like a drunken sailor without any mental aptitude as to whether or not if it really working. After XX trillion later, we're at square negative one while the Chinese and others are at square XX. It's really the decline of an empire [built on cheap credit and economic imperialism btw].

He clearly lacks the intelligence and ambition to be independently wealthy.
He's just some cranky old asshole (formerly known as Vhehn) who has a few bucks in the market and spends his final days bitching about religion. Typically, those who are the most outspoken critics of an issue (in this case religion) are those who invested some part of their lives in it. That's why I'm certain the guy spent a great deal of his youth in a seminary.
He does live in South Dakota (or at least recently did). He brags about some 5,000 square foot aluminum sided shithole he probably put together himself.
