Yes, it is a joke, that is Gervais' style, a kind of roast humour and roasts are as old as the hills (in educated circles). That is why they hire him, people like roasts. There is even a roast of Trumpy.
Whether it is a well taken joke, mileage may vary. These guys put thought into how close to the edge they should go and what they can justify. It is supposed to sting and make people wince. I recall Gervais saying once the one bit he did regret was an unfairly harsh sting on Tim Allen.
You should explain that his fellow thespians, I don’t think they got it.
They got it, it is just the far right relatively uneducated and primitive humourless (except for fart humour etc.) making something out of nothing.
You will notice Boney's roast. He did that because he wanted to get into Hollywood. All Donny ever really wanted was to be Harvey Weinstein. He has his Nuremberg rallies now for narcissist supply.

It's funny how people say Trump is so thin skinned, but he does these roasts. I can't imagine Obama ever willing going on a show to get roasted for fun.

Because Trump is the star of the show, he laps it up the attention like a kitten drinking cream. As long as things stay in the "rules" of a roast and there are rules, Trump can handle it.
Being a "moron" is a relative thing Autistic Ra. You have a Trump style demeaning name now, a technique old as time to undermine. Trump has been calling people names all his life. He can take it from some and will go into rage if someone "below" him uses one on him in kind. You are below near everyone (but you think you are smart, we know) so you see Trump and say Alan Turing as the same in intelligence. You can't really differentiate so far above your own level.
For the people near and above Trump, his little well practised narcissist charisma tricks don't work, they just irritate. Anyone can do what Trump does you just need to have a little part of your brain not working so you don't feel shame.
