This article today in the FT is very concerning.

What can we do, as individual traders working on a Win 10 PC connected to a home router do to protect ourselves?

Behind Paywall # Anatomy of A Hedge Fund Hack #

Gosh, I keep reading on here that only crypto exchanges are unsafe because they're 'unreguhlated.'
Based on that advice from about half the ET'ers, you shouldn't have any worries. These things don't happen in reg'luhtory 'vironment.

This is doable. But what if the WiFi is compromised by another user/device? With the trading PC be immuned?

Tony,

Sorry for the delay, just caught up to your question.

Lot of good comments here.

I used Zyxel ZyWall with good results. My gripe w current models is that most every vendor is moving to some type subscription revenue system and for a trivial IP addr permit/discard function, they are way overpriced. I use direct Enet cabling for the computer/ext firewall and disable WiFi on the trading system entirely. Safer, faster, simpler, cheaper.

I have found even the smaller hardware units have plenty of capacity for one trading platform. Here are some to give a look to:

https://www.networkstraining.com/best-hardware-firewalls-for-home-small-business/

I recommend making 100% sure to get one where admin setup control be disallowed on the WAN port so only you can configure the unit locally. Def set a long, weird password and stash it non-electronically somewhere you will be able to find it later.

Once programmed to discard all packets from all other addresses than your broker’s server farm, hackers can’t even sniff that you are there. This MO likely is protection at the 99.95% level IMHO, but won’t protect if the vendor has a built in back door where ET can call home like a bunch of Chinese “security” cameras.

Had a friend the put a WireShark sniffer on his system capturing addresses of all traffic. It was pretty eye opening how many destinations were in the capture ... over half were overseas. :banghead:

If I were you, won’t give a f**k to it. Speak with your broker and go for a VPS and forget about having to fret about the power backup, any hardware, or an internet. That’s the least I would want- fumbling around multiple data softwares and latency.

what's VPS?

@tonyf VPS is a Virtual Private Server. They are managed remotely by a data center, and only you have secure access to what is run on the server.

We specialize in Chicago VPS for lag free chart trading. I can arrange a free trial for you to test and learn about the benefits of trading over a VPS.

@waderichards Agreed! Our quality VPS are only $59/month and never have to worry about connections problems, power backup, hardware failures, etc. Much cheaper and easier route than setting up multiple redundant home ISPs.

Most traders want to focus on trading and profitability, not on the technical requirements of running their own home servers.

thanks but an overkill for my needs - I like to focus on investing and not tech and look for the lowest hanging fruit when it comes to tech, in the (very small) hope of replicating this performance over the next 12 months:

thanks for your understanding.
