Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has had the best year of any Republican and virtually anyone in the world, ranking third in Rasmussen Report’s new poll of the of the “most influential” people in the world, behind Pope Francis and President Obama.

In the new poll, Cruz, who made headlines for trying to dismantle Obamacare, was the pick for the most influential of 11 percent. The pope was tops at 23 percent, Obama second at 21 percent.

Among Republicans, Cruz was second behind the pope, with 19 percent calling the freshman senator and Tea Party leader the world’s most influential leader. Just 9 percent of Republicans said the same thing of Obama.

Two other Republicans on Rasmussen’s list, House Speaker John Boehner and newly reelected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, tied at 3 percent.

Sen. Ted Cruz, an outspoken freshman who may launch a 2016 presidential bid, is planning to renounce his Canadian citizenship soon, his office said

Mr. Cruz, 43, has lawyers prepping the paperwork to get it done, his office told The Associated Press, after lawyers in Canada said it was a relatively simply process and questioned what was taking so long.

The senator told the Dallas Morning News last year that he would renounce his Canadian citizenship after he learned that it was automatically bestowed on him at birth and did not require affirmative action to claim it, as he had thought, AP reported.

Where a presidential hopeful was born is a high-profile issue these days.

President Barack Obama was compelled to release his birth certificate from Hawaii after “birthers” claimed he was born in Kenya or elsewhere and not eligible to take the White House.

A U.S. president must be a “natural born citizen” of the country, but many scholars say children of U.S. parents who are born overseas should qualify for the office.

Mr. Cruz was born in Calgary in 1970, while his Cuban-born father and Delaware-born mother were working in the oil business.

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), notorious for his hours-long speech that led to the government shutdown in October, hoped to name a new target Thursday in his relentless fight to defund Obamacare.

As the Senate prepared to vote on a $1.1 trillion spending bill, Cruz named the omnibus his latest victim, presenting two amendments to the budget bill to defund Obamacare shortly before the Senate voted to invoke cloture.

Without hesitation, Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) objected to both of his amendments.

"The majority leader and Senate Democrats have chosen not to listen to the American people," Cruz said, yielding the floor.

According to the Washington Post's Lori Montgomery, Senate Republicans spent their lunch hour urging Cruz to leave his health care qualms aside, and allow a budget vote to proceed.

Despite Cruz's idea to derail the vote, one Republican source told The Huffington Post that Cruz could only "prevent the vote from being sped up. But he can’t block the bill." If cloture is invoked, the Senate will vote on the spending bill, free of any measures to defund Obamacare.

The Senate began a roll call vote to invoke cloture on the spending bill at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. If 60 votes are cast to invoke cloture, the Senate will immediately proceed to vote on the bill.

Today's Senate Republican luncheon and Cruz's floor speech were the first mentions of Cruz's intent to bring Obamacare into the budget vote, a publicity stunt doomed to fail from the start.

Recently, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates wrote in his memoir that Vice President Joe Biden isn't really an expert on anything, especially on foreign policy. Gates noted that Biden has been wrong on every foreign policy decision for the past four decades.

Trump wants to upset Cruz.
***************************************************************************************
BOSTON (Reuters) - Outspoken real estate billionaire Donald Trump said on Tuesday he may seek the Republican presidential nomination for 2016, claiming he wants to undo President Barack Obama's legacy.

Trump had toyed with the idea of running for the 2012 Republican nomination but pulled out months before the primary, saying he was not ready to leave the private sector.

"It is something I would certainly look at. You know why? I'm unhappy with the way things are going in America," he said in a telephone interview ahead of a speech at the "Eggs & Politics" forum at St. Anselm College in New Hampshire - an event that tends to feature presidential hopefuls.
