ThinkorSwim Question about chart appearance

Regarding the ThinkorSwim interface: What does the alternating shaded background indicate, correlated to time axis, on charts, when the time period is changed to less than a day? Is there a way to toggle this on and off?

long ago changed the defaults on mine, but from what I remember if you're looking at a stock off hours are shaded differently from hours when the exchange is open.
