China also, has a larger population than Japan or South Korea. If you are going by the official China reports of infections, 82,758, deaths 4,632. So, explain why the US has 45,126 deaths from 815,892 infections. Yeah, use of masks has nothing to do with? Actually, China did pretty well compared to the US. Now, that the US has mandated the use of masks, let us see if it does not affect the number of infections and deaths going forward. Too bad for those who passed away, we cannot bring them back.
Well first... the reported number of deaths and infections in China is not accurate.
Even if the count was accurate -- masks did not stop the COVID-19 pandemic in China; a complete lockdown of people stopped the pandemic in China. And "lockdown" in China means they literally barred people into their homes/apartments, not the gentle "stay at home" policy found in the West.
They locked down only Wuhan, China not the rest of the country. That is a tiny portion of their population. What about the rest of China? There should be more deaths and infections all over China at a minimum. So, you cannot really discount the use of the masks and it preventing infections and thereby deaths. That is just plain common sense. People in Wuhan, China still allowed to go out and buy food even if they were on quarantine so, lots of opportunities to infect others but, everyone wore a mask. We shall see the effect in the US if it reduces the number of infections and deaths going forward. Now, that wearing masks is being made mandatory in most states. And why do doctors and nurses everywhere use masks if it is totally useless as you suggest?
One person in household in Wuhan was allowed to go out once per week to the closest grocery store. And only allowed to go if no one in the apartment/house was COVID-19 positive or showing symptoms (in this case the government would deliver food and the door was nailed shut). In the grocery store only a tiny number of people were allowed in at your assigned appointment time. You had to keep roughly 50 feet away from other people in the store.
Wuhan and surrounding areas was the hotspot for the virus and had the majority of the cases. Other Chinese cities had minimal cases but also had mitigating measures including most workplaces being shutdown; they also had advance notice so they could do better preparation. These other cities in China had mitigating measures which included evicting people from the city who were considered high risk (take a look at all the recent stories about the mistreatment of people some Africa in China) and locking people in their homes if COVID-19 was suspected (as seen in many videos).
China has a new hotspot near the Russian border, Suifenhe, which is now locked down in the same manner as Wuhan.
Face masks did little to slow the disease in Wuhan or elsewhere in China. The government's lockdowns stopped COVID-19.
They knew the masks work, but the whole country didn't have enough, so they didn't want average Joe to go out and buy mask. Hospital staff first. Once we had more masks they acknowledged that they work. Not protecting you a lot, but protecting others from you.
Could have played it better? Sure. Scarfs, bandanas and other similar clothes works pretty well. They should have advised wearing those...
Japan and South Korea still have low infection and low death rates. And why are doctors and nurses wearing face masks? Common sense will tell you, if you are infected, when you cough or sneeze, most of the Corona Virus would be absorbed by the mask at a minimum. If someone who does not wear a mask sneezes or coughs and they have the Corona Virus, the mask will protect you by keeping out the Corona Virus spray from you. Granted, it is not 100% protection, it is still pretty good. I am sure we will find you soon enough in the US now, that masks have been mandated and a lot of Americans now are wearing masks.

I am very fast to criticize. They lied about the mask. You believed it.
