We have a representative government in the hopes that reasoned representatives and the courts won't go along with a democratic majority that wants to trample on the Constitutional rights of a few.

That has not worked out well on many occasions.

And, we haven't even touched on the efficiency (lack there of) when government begins to run public projects.

Redistribution of wealth thru taxation is very irritating. I have to look at it every January. But, one day I realized that if we did not do this, we would have much larger problems.
