I always thought this kind of thinking to be a bit of a pipedream really.
Tell me which armed man can protect his property when 5 or 10 other armed men want to get in.
If you are rich you can buy your own protection but that would be only good as long as the money was flowing in...why should they protect you if society crumbled anyway and they could just take your facilities and use it for themselves....
And say even if you do manage to remain protected by yourself or your crew...Is that really the world one wants to live in?
Not being able to just take a walk in the park or go for icecream?
Just as the poor will have to live with never becoming (super) rich the rich will have to live with the idea of paying for some kind of stability which is in their own benefit.
Sometimes this balance get's lost and problems arise I would think.
On a side note I really think these riots will worry the rich really globaly as they search for the best way to protect themselves in the future and I have to say it's not an easy subject.
These don't worry the rich, as you stated they have money for protection. It is the hardworking middle class that gets ruined. Small businesses will not come back as fast as some corporate shop. They have to live with these animals. And yes an armed man can stop 4-5. You think these animals are brave? lol. Stayed unarmed and keep supporting them with welfare. It is a failure, if this doesn't show it, I don't know what will. Zero welfare should be given in response.

I agree on it being hardest on middle class.
I disagree on being armed yourself making much of a difference. Yes in this UK scenario but those are just children I am talking about a through crumbling of society as we know it.
Further then that I share your concern on the effectiveness of welfare but safety is a fragile thing that can not by definition be acomplished through zero welfare or total welfare. It's tricky and many factors are in play. In no way I would claim to have the solution to be honest.
