There Are Jobs

Quote from seneca_roman:

"SAN ANTONIO -- Development of the Eagle Ford shale deposit in South Texas could bring close to 2,000 new jobs to the San Antonio area, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said.
Over the past few weeks, Wolff has met with executives at two major oil companies, Marathon and Halliburton, and came away confident the companies had intentions to develop within Bexar County limits.
"What makes us attractive (is) we're close, but we're also an urban area. We have the housing, the workforce, the amenities (and the) culture," Wolff said.
Wolff said the companies will likely develop land south of Loop 1604, in between Interstates 35 and 37.
The jobs they bring will be high-paying. A productive truck driver making as much as $100,000 per year, Wolff said.
Wolff said executives at Marathon Oil told him they consider the Eagle Ford deposit the most productive and viable in the country."

I love the phrase "as much as" when someone is hiring. What they should advertise is what the average and median wage is, that would be a truer gauge of what the pay really is.

Quote from nutmeg:

My daughter (22yo) works in fast food. She gets her news from different sources than me, different age viewpoint, etc. So I asked her, what she thinks of the occupy wall street protests.

In general she presented a pessimitic outlook on the economy.

I said "That's a fair assesment."

Then I asked her if she hadn't read the news would her outlook be any different? But before I let her answer, I said "How's sales in the fast food business?" She said "Up" with a smile on her face.

I remnded her she got two substantial raises this year, she said "yea". I also reminded her that she was also looking to work a second job, (which she had already applied for and was accepted) and I told her not to do it, which she didn't.

Then I said, based on your real life situation as opposed to your perception, "How are things?" "You're paying the rent, buying your red bull, lottery tickets, etc"

She works hard, follows the program. To me, this isn't complicated. I do not have to worry if she'll be a success in her life, she is on track.
Hmmmm. Do you have a pic and a phone number?

Just kidding - just kidding! :D

Watch out for Lucrum though.

Quote from seneca_roman:

they could make $100K. Actually he was looking first for vets and second for recent HS grads who were willing to work hard.

Suddenly, those really expensive college educations look like a poor investment, don't they ?
If you are in IT today, even with an advanced degree, you are struggling to make $100k.

This surprised me: one of the companies CHK held a jobs fair recently to fill 20 driver jobs and only 60 showed up. Shocked the hell out of me when I saw that. BS NOTE: I got this info second hand so it may be bs. Other job fairs draw big turnouts but it seems the driver jobs are somewhat hard to fill once the druggies and those who can't pass the background check are weeded out.

I roofed a house for a truck driver in West Texas, the scum bag still owes me a couple of thousand dollars, maybe I should send him the ad.

In Alabam, we are seeing the effects of the crackdown on illegals, but it is hurting the ag. industry as farmers are finding it difficult finding Americans willing to do the work:

"Following the passage of Alabama's strict immigration law, which has caused thousands of undocumented immigrants to flee the state due to fears of deportation, farmers are suffering from a labor shortage that they say won't be filled by unemployed American citizens

Farmers in Alabama and other parts of the country often must rely on undocumented immigrants for labor because they say Americans aren't willing to commit themselves to strenuous, low-paying jobs that immigrants are willing to perform -- and well.

Cut perpetual unemployment benefits and they'll do the work.

If the farmers paid a fair wage they could get workers. It might be $15 to &25 an hour but there is a price where they can find legal workers. The farmers need to stop complaining and pony up.
