Expert says 'parental intervention' needed to help stem violence involving minors

However, Powers says by the time police get involved – sometimes it's too late.

He believes parents of juveniles need to be involved in addressing the problem.

“Young people learn from observations, participation, and demonstration,” said Powers. “The last way they learn is a whole lot of conversation so if we begin to paint the picture of the consequences for them early on, paint the pictures of the consequences for their parents, and then the final element is increasing police presence and I think we can mitigate the amount of juveniles involved in this amount of behavior.”
