The true (in a sense) cost of military spending and what else it could have bought

You worked in intelligence? You really are one dumb SOB!

What battalion were you in at MCRD?

Quote from DAS Trader:
I don't see Iran as a threat.
Israel, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Europe, etc, see Iran as a threat. Russia & China will deal with US.
Quote from DAS Trader:
No nation with a nuclear weapon has ever fired a nuke at another nation with a nuclear weapon.
We keep going in circles here. Because no nation has attacked the World Trade Center with aircraft, you wouldn't have believed 9/11 warnings. If one nation fires a nuke at another, you can bet that other nation will fire back. With Muslims, they know they will be with 72 virgins.
Quote from DAS Trader:
do you have anything of substance to contribute to this discussion?
This nation is in trouble, you're flirting with the left with this anti-military propaganda. If you vote 3rd party and Obama gets re-elected, you may as well be a leftist because you're as self-centered as they are. You have to do what's best for the nation. That means making sure Obama doesn't get re-elected.

I was a Hollywood Marine, platoon 3048, class of '82.

Both nations destroyed? Nonsense. There are only two triad nuclear powers but that aside, mutually assured destruction absolutely does NOT apply to any two nations with nuclear weapons.
Quote from DAS Trader:

No nation with a nuclear weapon has ever fired a nuke at another nation with a nuclear weapon. The reason is simple, if I have nukes and the other guy has nukes, and I fire my nukes at the other guy, he's gonna fire his nukes at me. Makes sense right? What would happen then? Both nations would be destroyed. Could that be why it hasn't happened? Also, you don't hear much about us pushing North Korea around anymore and do you know why? Because they are now a nuclear power. Gee, go figure that.

Let's clear a few things up because you seem to have the wrong impression. First, I am a centrist Libertarian. Second, I am the furthest thing from anti military, having served 8 yrs in the USMC. I consider every member of the military my brother and sister. I am anti war, but not anti military. Try and appreciate that not too subtle distinction.

You should read the book "War is a Racket" by Smedley Darlington Butler, who was probably the most decorated Marine in the history of the Corps (2 cmh's). Here, in case you are not much of a reader:

Criticizing our nations flawed foreign policy is not tantamount to criticizing the military. That's a Fox News talking point, not reality.

Finally, if "someone" warned me of an impending attack, having worked in intelligence, I would do the following:

1. Assess the source. Has he or she reported in the past? Has past reporting been reliable?

2. Attempt to corroborate the information with other sources, ELINT, SIGINT, COMINT, HUMINT, etc.

3. Determine if this threat ties into any other indications/warnings of hostilities.

4. Assuming the threat was found to be credible, I would then put together a threat assessment, suggest countermeasures, and provide my commentary so the commander could make an informed decision.

Any questions?

Very good. No Civil Affairs experience?

Are you trying to tell me what I would have believed? Hell our own government proposed flying planes into buildings (see Operation Northwoods) in order to start a war with Cuba so it's not like it would have been a completely foreign idea. You've heard of Operation Northwoods, haven't you?

We're in trouble alright. We have a 15 trillion dollar deficit and a main culprit is our out of control offense spending. I will be voting for Ron Paul, even if I have to write him in. If the GOP is too dumb to realize that he is the only true conservative on the stage then they have no one to blame but themselves.

Class of '82? That implies yours was the only platoon to graduate that year and it wasn't. What month did your platoon graduate?

Also, I cannot seem to locate any reference to a platoon 3048 @ MCRD San Diego in 1982. I have this forum that lists all the graduating platoons going all the way back to 1900 and, oddly enough, the platoon you claim to have graduated from does not seem to be a part of it....at least...in 1982. There was a Platoon 3048 that graduated in August of 1980, but not 1982. Here is a link to that platoon's graduation photo:

Did you get the year you graduated bootcamp wrong, is my source wrong, or are you just full of shit? Help me understand.

I have to go see a few clients but I will be very interested to see your explanation.

Yep, and I even gave fair warning. If you are pretending, you will be found out. Everyone in the military has a way of finding this stuff out!

Ooooorahhhh!

You two looking for someone else to make false accusations against?
